The Morris Lady Eagle varsity slowpitch softball team began its 2024 season this Monday at Kellyville.

Morris’ lone win comes against Sperry

The Morris Lady Eagle varsity slowpitch softball team began its 2024 season this Monday at Kellyville.

The Morris squad continued the start to their campaign Tuesday at Sperry for a 3-way showdown with Bartlesville and the host Sperry Lady Pirates.

The season opener, which was the first under new head coach Kallee King, did not go in the Lady Eagles favor, as the Morris ladies found themselves on the losing end of a 15-6 outcome.

The Morris ladies began Tuesday’s road trip to Sperry by awarding King her first coaching win at Morris with a 10-4 victory over the host Sperry Lady Pirates.

The Lady Eagles were unable to come away with a road sweep on Tuesday, dropping their showdown with Berryhill by a 17-7 margin to sit at 1-2 on the season.

The Morris squad was scheduled to compete at the Oktaha Tournament on Thursday before enjoying a week off for Spring Break before returning to action March 25 at Warner.

At Oktaha, the Lady Eagles were a part of Pool B of the Gold Pool and were scheduled to begin tournament action at 10 a.m. against Panama, followed at 11:10 a.m. against Fairland. After the two Pool Play games, the Morris ladies were scheduled to take the field at 2:45 p.m. against an opponent from Pool A of the Gold Pool (Oktaha, Quinton, Fort Gibson), depending how they finish in the Pool B standings, while their final tournament game will be at either 5:15 p.m. or 6:30 p.m., depending on their placement in the Gold Pool.

In Monday’s season opener at Kellyville, the host Lady Ponies broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the second, then added three more in the third for a 6-0 advantage after three innings of action.

The Lady Eagles broke up the shutout bid with a run in the top of the fourth, then knotted the score at 6-6 with five runs in the top of the fifth.

Kellyville ended the contest on the run rule, 15-6, with a 9-run bottom of the sixth.

The Morris offense was led by the duo of Emma Duclos (3 for 3, 3 singles) and Fire Clark (3 for 3, 3 singles, RBI) with three hits apiece.

Briley Cagle (2 for 3, single, double, RBI) and Dezmond Lewis (2 for 3, 2 singles, RBI) also recorded multi-hit games for the Lady Eagles in the season opener with two hits each.

The other four base hits against Kellyville came on singles by Talee Zackery, Kailyn Fixico, and Reese Pendley and an RBI single by Alli Guynes.

In Tuesday’s win over Sperry, the Lady Eagles began the scoring with two runs in the top of the first.

After Sperry tallied a run in the bottom of the second for a 2-1 Morris lead, the Morris ladies made it a 4-1 contest with a pair of runs in the top of the third, while the Lady Pirates cut the Morris lead to two, 4-2, with a run in the home half of the third.

The Lady Eagles extended their margin to six, 8-2, with four runs in the top of the fourth.

After Sperry cut the lead to 8-4 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, the Morris ladies put the finishing touches on their 10-4 win with two insurance runs in the top of the seventh.

The Lady Eagles were led offensively against Sperry by Emma Duclos (3 for 4, 2 singles, double, RBI), Fire Clark (3 for 4, 3 singles, RBI), and Ashlyn Clevenger (3 for 4, single, double, triple, 5 RBIs) with three hits apiece.

Kailyn Fixico also had a multi-hit game for Morris against Sperry, finishing 2 for 4 with two singles and 2 RBIs.

The other six Morris base hits in the win came on singles by Briley Cagle, Alli Guynes, Kaydence Ausbrooks, Reese Pendley, Baylee Qualls, and Talee Zackery.

In Tuesday’s road battle with Berryhill, the Lady Eagles began their scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first, then added a run in the second and four in the fourth.

Berryhill opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the first, then plated six in the second and four in the third for a 14-7 advantage after four innings of action.

The Maidens tallied their final three runs of the contest in the top of the fifth, while the Morris offense was unable to produce any runs in their half of the inning to suffer the 17-7 setback.

Emma Duclos was one of five Morris batters with a 2-hit game against Berryhill, finishing 2 for 3 with a double, home run, and 5 RBIs. Duclos’ roundtripper came on a 2-run blast in the first.

Other Lady Eagle players with 2-hit performances against Berryhill were Fire Clark (2 for 2, single, double, 2 RBIs), Kailyn Fixico (2 for 3, 2 singles), Kaydence Ausbrooks (2 for 3, 2 singles), and Talee Zackery (2 for 2, 2 singles).
