Golden Demons split district battle with Kiefer
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

The Beggs Golden Demon varsity baseball progam battled the Kiefer Trojans earlier this week in a pair of District 3A-6 contests.

The Demons (5-2) began the homeand- home district meeting with their Creek County foes with a narrow 3-2 victory Monday at Golden Demon Park in Beggs, then suffered a 9-8, 8-inning, loss to the Trojans Tuesday in Kiefer.

The Beggs squad was scheduled to return to action Thursday with home meetings with Okemah and Kellyville and are scheduled to travel to Okemah on Friday before closing out the week Saturday at home against Chouteau- Mazie. In Monday’s home district battle with Kiefer, the Demons opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first.

The Beggs squad doubled their lead to 2-0 with a run in the home half of the fifth, while Kiefer knotted the score at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth.

The Demons pushed across the goahead run in the bottom of the sixth, then kept the visitors off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh to earn the 3-2 decision.

The Beggs offense was limited to just two hits in the contest – singles by Nate Melton and Jace Basquez.

Landon Helt went the distance on the mound for Beggs to earn the pitching win, allowing two runs on two hits, walking two and striking out six in seven innings of work.

In Tuesday’s district finale with Kiefer, the Demons took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first.

Kiefer plated a run in each of the second and third innings to deadlock the score at 2-2 after three innings of action.

Beggs broke the tie with two runs in the fourth, then added a run in the fifth and two in the seventh for a 7-2 advantage, heading to the final half-inning of regulation.

The host Trojans tallied five runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the district contest to extra innings with the score tied 7-7.

The Demons went back in front, 8-7, with a run in the top of the eighth, while Kiefer pushed across two runs with a 2-run single in the bottom of the inning to hand the Beggs squad the 9-8 setback.

The Beggs offense was led by the duo of Nate Melton (2 for 4, 2 singles, RBI) and Jace Basquez (2 for 5 , single, double) with two hits apiece.

The other Demon base hits on Tuesday came on singles by Ranson Stephens and Colton McCoy and an RBI single by Carson Cooper.

Jerrett Hammer was saddled with the pitching loss for Beggs in the extra- inning setback, allowing two runs on one hit with one strikeout and two walks in two-thirds of an inning of relief work.

Melton got the start on the mound for Beggs on Tuesday, giving up two runs on four hits, walking one and striking out three in three innings of work.

Stephens took over in relief for the Demons in the fourth, allowing five runs on two hits with five strikeouts and three walks in four innings of work.
