The Dewar Dragon varsity baseball team improved to 7-0 on the year with a pair of 8-run victories earlier this week.

The Dragons (ranked 4th in Class A) began the week with a 14-6, run-rule, win over the Warner Eagles on Monday at Wiley Ryal Park in Dewar, then earned their seventh-straight win to begin the 2024 season Tuesday with a 13-5 decision over the Sallisaw Central Tigers in Sallisaw.

Dewar was back in action Thursday at 3:30 p.m. against Barnsdall and are scheduled to take on Moss and Vian Friday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, and Wright City on Saturday at 2 p.m. The 4-game schedule this weekend is part of the 3-day Dewar Dragon Baseball Festival.

In Monday’s home meeting with Warner, the Dragons began the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, then added three in the second and one in the fourth for a 6-0 advantage.

The visitors pushed across six runs in the top of the fifth to deadlock the score at 6-6 after four and one-half innings of action.

Dewar regained the lead at 9-6 with three runs in the home half of the fifth, then ended the game on the run rule (14-6) with a 5-run bottom of the sixth.

Zack Mullen earned the pitching win for Dewar on Monday, working one and one-third scoreless innings in relief, striking out two and walking one.

Mullen took over for starter Aidan Tomlinson, who worked the first four and two-third innings, allowing six runs on four hits with 11 strikeouts, two walks, and two hit batters.

The Dewar offensive output against Warner was led by the trio of Tomlinson (2 for 5, single, double, 4 RBIs), Mullen (2 for 4, 2 singles, RBI) and Tanner Wilson (2 for 3, 2 singles) with two hits apiece.

The other three Dragon hits on Monday came on singles by Luke Hankins and Peyton Kilhoffer and an RBI single by Skelly Taylor.

In Tuesday’s road win at Sallisaw Central, the host squad opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first.

After a scoreless second, both teams tallied a run in their half of the third for a 3-1 lead for Sallisaw Central after three innings of action.

The Dragons cut the deficit to one, 3-2, with a run in the top of the fourth, then took over the lead, 8-3, with six runs in their half of the fifth.

Sallisaw Central made it an 8-5 contest with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, while Dewar put the finishing touches on the 8-run victory with a run in the top of the sixth and four runs in the top of the seventh for the 13-5 decision.

Skelly Taylor was awarded the pitching win for Dewar, allowing three runs on four hits with two strikeouts, one walk, and three hit batters in four innings of work.

Zack Mullen worked the final three innings in relief to earn the pitching save, giving up two runs on one hit, while striking out eight and hitting two.

Aidan Tomlinson was the top offensive performer for the Dragons on Tuesday, finishing 3 for 4 with a pair of singles and a double.

Peyton Kilhoffer also recorded a multi-hit game in the road win, finishing 2 for 4 with a pair of singles and 2 RBIs.

The remainder of the Dewar base hits against Sallisaw Central came on a single by Mullen, RBI singles by Taylor, Stoney Yaerger, and Jonathon Wilson, and a 3-run triple by Luke Hankins.
