Carole S. Adler, American author of children’s books, celebrates her birth date on Feb. 23, 1932, in Long Island, N.Y.
She spent most of her life in New York and was a Hunter College undergraduate, Russell Sage College, Miss. and received a B.A. with English as her major and Psychology her minor. In New York, she was a middle school English teacher before moving to Tucson, Ariz. in 1996.
Adler became a full-time author after her first book, “The Magic of the Glits” (a tale of loss, love and lasting friendship with magical creatures who grant wishes) was published in 1979. This book won the William Allen White Award and the Golden Kite Award. Many of her nearly 50 books have received some type of awards.
The American Library Association chose her book, “The Shell Lady’s Daughter,” as the best young adult book of 1983, the year it was published. Many of her books have also been published in Japan, Germany, England, Denmark, Austria, Sweden and France.
