Wilson cagers sweep district title
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

The Wilson varsity basketball program began its postseason journey towards a possible state tournament appearance last weekend with a sweep of district championships.

The Wilson cage squads captured the district crowns last Saturday in front of their hometown fans at the Tiger Den. The Lady Tigers advanced to the winner’s bracket of this week’s regional tournament with a 56-30 victory over the Bowlegs Lady Bison in the championship game of the Class B, Area III, District 7 tournament, while the Tigers advanced to the regional tournament winner’s side of the bracket with an 89-25 win over the Graham-Dustin Chieftains on Saturday.

The Wilson cagers began postseason play last Thursday and Friday, respectively, as the Lady Tigers avoided elimination and guaranteed a spot in this week’s regional tournament with a 70-26 victory over the Agra Lady Wildcats in last Thursday’s second of two elimination contests in the 4-team district tournament, while the Tigers punched their ticket to the regional tournament last Friday with an 87-24 win over the Agra Wildcats in the second of two opening-round contests.

Bowlegs and Graham-Dustin split the other two elimination games last week with Bowlegs taking the girls game by a 46-25 margin and Graham-Dustin taking the boys contest by a 46-35 decision.

With the district title victories, the Wilson cagers will begin the second phase of their trek towards the state basketball championships in Oklahoma City at the Class B, Area III, regional tournament at Roff High School. The Lady Tigers are scheduled to take on the Geronimo Lady Bluejays in a winner’s bracket contest Thursday at 6 p.m., while the Tigers are scheduled to square off against the Tipton Tigers in a winner’s bracket game Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Wins on Thursday will put the Wilson squads into Saturday’s regional championship games at Roff High School at 6 and 7:30 p.m., respectively, while losses on Thursday will drop the Tigers and Lady Tigers into consolation semifinal contests at Roff on Friday at 1 and 2:30 p.m., respectively.
