Beggs cagers earn split with Kellyville
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

The Beggs varsity basketball program came away with a split decision Tuesday evening at Kellyville.

The Lady Demons began the road trip with a 5450 decision over the host Kellyville Lady Ponies, while the Demons dropped the nightcap by a 61-48 decision.

The Beggs cage squads will return to the hardwood Friday with a home meeting with their arch rivals, the Preston Pirates and Lady Pirates. After the county showdown with Preston, the Demons and Lady Demons will also be at home Tuesday against Henryetta and next Friday against Hilldale. Beggs’ final regular-season contest is slated for February 13 against Okmulgee.

In Tuesday’s girls game at Kellyville, the host Lady Ponies took the opening frame by an 11-10 margin, while the Lady Demons outscored their foes 15-9 in the second period for a 25-20 halftime advantage.

The Beggs ladies extended their lead to 12 (41-29) with eight minutes remaining in regulation following a 16-9 margin in the third quarter.

In the final stanza, Kellyville put up 21 points in a comeback attempt. Beggs countered with 13 points in the final frame to walk off the Kellyville gym floor with the 54-50 decision.

The 4-point victory earned the Lady Demons the season series sweep with the Lady Ponies, as Beggs took the first meeting on January 9 in Beggs by a 48-43 margin.

Leading the way offensively for the Lady Demons in the road win was Rylee Youngblood, who finished with a game-high 27 points. Destiny Clay and Bleu Hall just missed scoring in double figures for Beggs with nine and eight points, respectively. Other Lady Demon scorers against Kellyville were Konner Stanton with six and Tessa Christy and Kamya Stallings two each.

In Tuesday’s boys contest at Kellyville, both teams tallied 10 points in the first period, then Kellyville came out of the second quarter with a 2014 advantage to lead by six at halftime, 30-24.

The Demons cut the deficit to four, 41-37, after a 13-11 margin in third stanza, but the second-half comeback bid was thwarted in the final frame, as the host Ponies took the fourth quarter by a 20-11 margin, handing the Beggs gentlemen the 61-48 setback.

The 13-point loss awarded Kellyville the season series sweep, as the Ponies earned a 71-58 decision in the first meeting on January 9 in Beggs.

Rickey Smith was the top offensive contributor for the Demons in the road loss, finishing with a team-best 23 points. Other Beggs scorers against Kellyville on Tuesday were Jaxon Remington and Brayden King with six points apiece, Dakota Hudson four, Ezrah Anderson and Jaylen Williams three each, Jason Nethon two, and Jace Basquez one.
