Okmulgee cagers sweep road battle with Webster
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

The Okmulgee varsity basketball program came away with a pair of double-digit victories at Tulsa Webster High School last Friday evening.

The Lady Bulldogs improved to 5-11 on the season with a 41-18 decision over the host Lady Warriors in Friday’s opening contest, while the Bulldogs evened their season record at 8-8 with a decisive 68-40 win in the nightcap.

The Okmulgee cage squads were back in action Tuesday evening at home against the Cascia Hall Commandos and Lady Commandos in a contest that was originally scheduled to take place January 16 in Tulsa, but was pushed back and location changed due to inclement weather in the area caused the postponement. The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs will close out the week Saturday with a county matchup with Henryetta at historic Brock Memorial Gymnasium in Okmulgee.

In last Friday’s girls game at Tulsa Webster, the Lady Bulldogs trailed by one, 10-9, after the first eight minutes of action, then took a 16-12 lead into the halftime break after a 7-2 advantage in the second period. The Okmulgee ladies outscored the host Lady Warriors by a combined 25-4 in the second half to walk away with the convincing 41-18 decision.

Cora Love led the way offensively for Okmulgee with a team-best 14 points, followed by Caedence Smith with 10. Other Lady Bulldog scorers last Friday were Brylee Edlin with eight, Kalacee Rangel three, Natori Yates and Timara Stacy two apiece, and Victoria Montgomery and Addison Yates one each.

In last Friday’s boys contest at Tulsa Webster, the Bulldogs jumped out to an 18-6 advantage after one quarter of play, then went into the intermission in complete control, 38-13, after a 20-7 margin in the second stanza.

An 18-14 advantage for the Okmulgee gentlemen in the third period extended their lead to 56-27 with eight minutes remaining in regulation.

The host Warriors emerged from the final frame with 13 points, but the Bulldogs countered with 12 points in the quarter to walk away with the 28-point victory – 68-40.

Jaxsun Fulton had the hot hand offensively for the Bulldogs in the road win, finishing with a teamhigh 27 points. Allen Thierry joined Fulton in double-digit scoring on Friday with a 10-point performance. Other Okmulgee scorers against Webster were Jeremiah Harley with seven, Joseph Robertson and Nolan Yates six apiece, Larry Yahola and Chase Spain three each, and Javin Hutchinson, Issac Brand, and Asiah Leybas two apiece.
