Eagles, Lady Demons earn narrow wins in county meeting
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

Morris and Beggs completed the home-and-home regular-season series Tuesday evening at the Don Shoemake Sports Complex in Morris.

The first meeting between the Okmulgee County rivals on December 5 in Beggs went in favor of the host Beggs squads.

In Tuesday’s county showdown in Morris, the Beggs Lady Demons swept the home-and-home series with a hard-fought 47-44 victory in the opening contest, while the host Morris Eagles came out of the nightcap with a 58-53 decision to sweep the home-and-home series with the Demons.

(Editor’s Note: The Eagles also defeated the Demons 67-65 last Thursday in the opening round of the 2024 Muscogee Nation Invitational at the Mvskoke Dome in Okmulgee.)

Both county schools were in action Friday with Beggs traveling to Eufaula and Morris hosting Preston. Beggs will also be in action Saturday, hosting Henryetta, in a roundball meeting that was originally scheduled for January 16 and had to be moved due to inclement weather. In Tuesday’s girls county meeting in Morris, the visiting Lady Demons came out of the opening eight minutes of action with a 14-9 advantage and took a 25-16 lead into the intermission following a narrow 11-7 margin in the second quarter.

The Beggs ladies escaped the third period with a 14-13 advantage to send the contest to the final frame with the visitors in front by 10 (39-29).

The host Lady Eagles tallied 15 points in the final stanza in a comeback bid, while the Lady Demons countered with eight points in the final eight minutes of regulation to walk away with the 47-44 decision.

Beggs’ Rylee Youngblood led all scorers with a game-high 27 points. Destiny Clay also found her way into double figures in the narrow win with 14 points. Other Lady Demon scorers on Tuesday were Kamya Stallings with four and Bleu Hall with two.

Emma Duclos was tops offensively for Morris, finishing with 13, followed by Fire Clark with 11. Alexis Schell was next in the scoring column for the Lady Eagles with eight, followed by Taylor Phillips with five, Asiah Barnett four, and Rylee Whitaker three.

In Tuesday’s boys county showdown, the Demons jumped out to an 18-8 lead after the first eight minutes of action, then outscored the host Eagles 18-11 in the second stanza for a 36-19 advantage at halftime.

The host Eagles cut the Beggs lead to four, 43-39, after a 20-7 margin in the third quarter, then completed the second-half comeback with a 19-10 advantage in the final frame to walk off their home floor with the 58-53 victory.
