Wilson sweeps Schulter in county battle
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

Two Okmulgee County varsity basketball programs squared off at Wilson’s Tiger Den Tuesday evening, as the host Wilson Tigers and Lady Tigers welcomed their rivals, the Schulter Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs, to town for a pair of roundball contests.

The host Wilson squads emerged from the county battle with the 2-game sweep with the Lady Tigers outlasting the Lady Bulldogs 59-29 in the opening contest, while the Tigers completed the home sweep with a 70-41 win over the Bulldogs in the nightcap.

Wilson will return to action Friday at home against Mason, while Schulter will enjoy a 2-week hiatus for the Holiday Break and will resume hardwood action January 4-6 at the Graham-Dustin Tournament.

Wilson will close out the first-half portion of its regular-season schedule Monday at Holdenville.

Tuesday’s county girls battle was extra special for Wilson head coach Rikki Wolfe, who was a basketball standout at Schulter from 2003-04 to 2006-07, and marked the first time Wolfe had the opportunity to coach against her alma mater in a regular-season or playoff game in her 10-year coaching career.

In Tuesday’s county girls game at Wilson, the host Lady Tigers outscored their county foes 13-2 in the opening frame and took a 31-20 lead into halftime after both cage squads tallied 18 points in the second period. The Wilson ladies took the final two quarters by margins of 16-4 and 12-5, respectively, for the 59-29 decision.

Wilson’s Janelle Proctor and Schulter’s Alyssa Evans led their respective teams in scoring in Tues- day’s county battle with 23 and 13 points, respectively.

Other Lady Tiger scorers on Tuesday were Brooklyn Weeks with 14, Jaslene Proctor six, Reese Herring and Kaylee Earhart four apiece, and Ty Williams, Jayda Pinkston, Abby Neep, and Jamie Proctor two apiece.

Other Lady Bulldog scorers on Tuesday were Jenna Henderson with seven, Caidence Campbell three, and Macee Henderson, Lexi Hurt, and Makalah Hawkins two apiece.

In Tuesday’s county boys contest at Wilson, the host Tigers led 25-6 after one and 40-20 at the intermission. Wilson took the third quarter by a narrow 16-15 margin, then closed out the 70-41 victory by outscoring the Bulldogs 13-6 in the final frame.

The top scorers for both teams were Zabrien Shelburn (24) for Wilson and Vincent Bess (16) for Schulter.

Keshon Shelburn joined Zabrien Shelburn in double figures for the host Tigers with 10, followed by Zion Shelburn with nine and Charles Shelburn with eight. Other Wilson scorers in Tuesday’s county meeting were Andrew Wilson with six, Esiah King four, and Aiden Barnard, Alec Ganote, and Peyton Proctor three apiece.

Bess was joined in double-digit scoring for Schulter by Bobby Calhoun with 15. Other Bulldog scorers on Tuesday were Kenta Carder with six and Connor Hammond and Isaiah Bauer two each.
