Bulldogs earn consolation crown at Cleveland Tourney

Okmulgee ladies down Webster for seventh

The Okmulgee varsity basketball programs closed out their 3-day participation at last weekend’s Cleveland Invitational Basketball Tournament with double-digit wins.

The Bulldogs routed the host Cleveland Tigers by a 65-50 decision to take home the consolation championship plaque at the 3-day event, while the Lady Bulldogs snapped a 4-game losing streak on Saturday with a 37-21 victory over the Daniel Webster Lady Warriors in the girls seventh-place contest.

The Okmulgee cage squads began tournament action on the losing side last Thursday with the Bulldogs dropping a heartbreaking 56-55 decision to Santa Fe South, while the Lady Bulldogs found themselves on the short end of a 57-22 outcome to Metro Christian.

In Friday’s consolation semifinal contests, the Okmulgee ladies fell into the seventh-place game with a 55-25 loss to Mingo Valley, while the OHS gentlemen rebounded from their opening-round loss to defeat Daniel Webster by a 42-28 decision.

The Okmulgee cage squads will return to action this Friday with a trip to Tulsa and a battle with the McLain Titans and Lady Titans.

Below are summaries from last weekend’s participation at the Cleveland Invitational Basketball Tournament.

Girls Bracket First Round

Metro Christian 57, Okmulgee 22

The Lady Bulldogs trailed 11-1 after one and 21-4 at halftime. The Okmulgee ladies were outscored 19-5 in the third period for a 40-9 deficit, heading into the final eight minutes of regulation. The Lady Bulldogs tallied 13 points in the final frame, but Metro Christian countered with 17 points in the quarter to hand the Okmulgee squad the 57-22 setback.

The Lady Bulldogs were led offensively by Caedence Smith, who finished with seven points. Other OHS scorers in the opening-round loss were Natori Yates with five, Cora Love and Mallory Rivas four each, and Brylee Edlin and Delazia Hammon one apiece.

Mingo Valley 55, Okmulgee 25

The Lady Bulldogs were outscored by margins of 16-3 and 11-3, respectively, in the first two quarters to head into the halftime break with a huge deficit, 27-6. After Mingo Valley took the third period by a 20-9 margin to extend its lead to 57-15, the Okmulgee squad escaped the final frame with a narrow 10-8 advantage to wind up on the losing end of a 55-25 outcome.

Cora Love was tops in the scoring column for the Lady Bulldogs with nine, followed by Kalacee Rangel with six, Delazia Hammon five, Caedence Smith three, and Natori Yates two.

Okmulgee 37, Tulsa Webster 21 After both teams tallied four points in a low-scoring first period, the Lady Bulldogs took a 20-8 lead into the intermission after outscoring the Lady Warriors 16-4 in the second stanza. Webster edged the Okmulgee ladies 9-8 in the third quarter for a 28-17 contest with eight minutes remaining in regulation. The Lady Bulldogs put the finishing touches on the 16-point victory by outscoring their foes 9-4 in the final period for the 37-21 decision and the seventh-place finish.

The top offensive performer for Okmulgee in the double-digit win was Mallory Rivas with 15, followed by Daijah Ghoston with 10. Other Lady Bulldog scorers against Tulsa Webster were Caedence Smith with six and Brylee Edlin, Addison Yates, and Cora Love two apiece.

— Boys Bracket First Round

Santa Fe South 56, Okmulgee 55 The Bulldogs came out of the opening frame with a narrow 12-9 advantage, then Santa Fe South took the second quarter by a 19-18 margin for a 30-28 Okmulgee lead at halftime. The Okmulgee gentlemen increased their lead to three, 47-44, heading into the final frame after edging their foes 1716 in the third period. Santa Fe South came out of the final stanza with a 12-8 advantage to hand the Bulldogs the heartbreaking 56-55 setback.

Okmulgee was led offensively in the opening-round loss by Jaxsun Fulton with 14, followed by Allen Thierry with 12. Other Bulldog scorers against Santa Fe South were Nolan Yates and Tyler Corn with seven apiece, Jeremiah Harley six, Javin Hutchinson five, and Joseph Robertson and Malakhi Baccus two each.

— Consolation Semifinals

Okmulgee 42, Tulsa Webster 28 The Bulldogs edged past the Warriors by margins of 10-8 and 9-8, respectively, in the first two quarters for a narrow 19-16 halftime lead. After both teams tallied seven points in the third quarter for a 26-23 Okmulgee advantage, the Bulldogs put the game out of reach in the final eight minutes of regulation by outscoring the Warriors 16-5 in the frame for the 42-28 decision.

Jaxsun Fulton led the offensive output for Okmulgee in the loser’s bracket victory with 15, followed by Malakhi Baccus with 10. The remaining Bulldog scorers against Webster were Allen Thierry with six, Nolan Yates four, Larry Yahola, Jeremiah Harley, and Asaiah Leybas two apiece, and Javin Hutchinson one.

— Consolation Finals

Okmulgee 65, Cleveland 50

The Okmulgee gentlemen took the opening frame by a 15-7 margin, then went into halftime with a 32-11 advantage after outscoring the host Tigers 17-4 in the second period. Cleveland attempted to overcome the 21-point halftime deficit in the second half, tallying totals of 18 and 21 points, respectively, in the final two frames. The Bulldogs countered with offensive totals of 16 and 17 points, respectively, in the second half to walk away with the 65-50 victory and the consolation championship plaque.

The balanced offensive attack for the Bulldogs against Cleveland were led by the duo of Allen Thierry and Jeremiah Harley with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Malakhi Baccus and Jaxsun Fulton just missed double- digit scoring for Okmulgee in the consolation title win with nine points apiece, while other Bulldog scorers last Saturday were Javin Hutchinson with six, Asaiah Leybas four, Tyler Corn three, and Larry Yahola, Nolan Yates, Issac Brand, Chase Spain, and Detorion Ligons two each.
