Preston cagers rout Okla. Union in road meeting
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

The Preston varsity basketball program returned to the hardwood after a short break this past Friday evening in South Coffeyville.

The Pirates and Lady Pirates walked off the court at Oklahoma Union High School with a pair of decisive victories over the host Cougars and Lady Cougars to sit at 2-1 on the year.

The Lady Pirates began the road sweep with a 63-20 decision, while the Pirates earned their second win of the 20232024 campaign with a 70-33 thrashing of the host Cougars in the nightcap.

The next scheduled contest for the Preston cage squads will be next Monday with open- ing-round games at the week-long Savanna Tournament and will also be on the road next Tuesday, traveling to Kellyville for a regular-season showdown with the Kellyville Ponies and Lady Ponies.

In last Friday’s girls road contest at Oklahoma Union, the Lady Pirates took the opening frame by a 19-2 margin, then went into the halftime break with a commanding 39-7 advantage after outscoring the host Lady Cougars 20-5 in the second stanza.

The final two periods also went in the direction of the visitors from Preston by margins of 12-7 and 12-6, respectively, to award the Lady Pirates the convincing 63-20 decision.

Emilie Stidman led a trio of double-digit scorers for Preston in the dominating win, finishing with a game-high 13 points. Shaunassi Jordan and Savannah King also tallied double-figure scoring totals last Friday with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Other offensive contributors for the Lady Pirates were Taylan Starr with nine, Josie Cope and Pheobey Finch six apiece, Kyliann Doke three, Heaven Fuller two, and Delanie Long one.

In last Friday’s boys battle at Oklahoma Union, the Pirates came out of the opening period with a 24-10 advantage, then edged past the host Cougars 11-9 in the second frame for a 35-19 lead at the intermission.

The Preston gentlemen put the game out of reach in the third quarter, outscoring their foes 27-4 in the stanza to take a commanding 62-23 advantage into the final eight minutes of regulation, where the host Cougars came away with a 10-8 margin to give the visiting Pirates the dominating 70-33 victory.

Jervais Goree led all scorers with a game-high 30-point performance. Tanner Young also reached double digits offensively for the victorious Pirate squad with 21 points.
