State School Report Cards released
By JOSHUA JACKSON REPORTER,

Earlier this month, the Oklahoma State Department of Education released the Statewide School Report Card.

Oklahoma State School Superintendent Ryan Walters noted that while there were some slight improvements, the data shows decline in reading proficiency, along with continued ‘chronic absenteeism.’

Statewide School Report Card results:

• Reading proficiency showed a decline overall, from 27.2 percent to 26.3 percent – a net decrease of 0.9 percent from 2022.

• In 8th grade reading scores, only 19.3 percent were proficient in 2023, a 5.7 percent decrease. No other grade had more than a 0.4 percent decrease in reading scores, which was 7th grade.

• 4th and 6th grade were the two grades that saw a very small uptick in reading scores.

• Math scores increased slightly overall, from 24.9 percent to 25.1 percent.

• 3rd, 7th and 8th grade all saw decreases in proficiency rates in math while 4th, 5th and 6th grade all saw proficiency rates rise by more than one percent in math.

On the state website, where the grades for each school can be viewed it states, “While no student report card tells the full story of a child, no school report card tells the full story of a school. Education is far more than a single score or letter grade, but it is important that families and communities can see both strengths and areas that need support and improvement.”

An article by Oklahoma Watch, which was printed in last Wednesday’s edition of the Times, noted three takeaways from the recent report cards: Math, Reading and Science scores mostly didn’t change, Academics overall have not recovered from the pandemic, and chronic absenteeism remains a problem statewide.

Here are the report cards for districts within Okmulgee County based on the numbers provided by the Oklahoma Department of Education.
