With funding through the federal Child and Adult Care Food Program, students at Morris Public Schools will now receive a third meal during the last hour of each school day. The idea came to Nutrition Director Lousenda Panell after receiving feedback from a few teachers at the school.
With funding through the federal Child and Adult Care Food Program, students at Morris Public Schools will now receive a third meal during the last hour of each school day. The idea came to Nutrition Director Lousenda Panell after receiving feedback from a few teachers at the school.
In a media interview, Nutrition Director Panell and Superintendent Chris Karch both expressed the importance of this program and the school’s ability to meet the needs of the student and the surrounding community.
“At the end of the day, our kids are hungry and they’re looking for something else to eat ... So I was like, ‘Well let me just see what we can do. I’m gonna go ahead and try to apply for the program,’” Panell said.
“I really think that what you’re seeing is a reflection of how our community operates as a whole,” Superintendent Karch stated. The program will help provide a nutritional option for students before they leave campus.
This is also a continuation of the school’s efforts to address food insecurity in the area. Previously, the MPS board voted to use COVID funding to continue providing free meals to all students.
