Tigers shutout Bluejacket, secure postseason berth
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

For the second-straight season, the Wilson Tiger varsity football team will compete in the Class C postseason.

The Tigers punched their playoff ticket this past Friday night with a 61-0 shutout win over the visiting Bluejacket Chieftains at the Tiger Den.

The shutout victory ended on the 45-point mercy rule at halftime and pushed the Wilson squad’s season record to 7-1 and kept the Tigers unbeaten in District C-3 play at 5-0.

The Wilson gridiron squad is scheduled to travel to South Coffeyville this Friday night for a 7 p.m. district battle with the winless South Coffeyville Lions (0-9, 0-6).

In last Friday’s home district meeting with Bluejacket, the Tigers put the game away in the first 12 minutes of action with a 38-point output.

The first Wilson score of the opening frame came on a 20yard TD run and conversion run by Zabrien Shelburn for an early 8-0 advantage.

Wilson’s next score came on a 15-yard TD pass from Zabrien Shelburn to twin brother Zion Shelburn. Charles Shelburn ran in the conversion attempt to double the Wilson lead at 16-0.

A 45-yard TD run by Keshon Shelburn and successful conversion run by Zabrien Shelburn pushed the Tiger advantage to 24-0, then Zabrien Shelburn scored on a 2-yard scamper later in the quarter and found Keshon Shelburn in the end zone on the conversion attempt for a 32-0 lead for the host Wilson Tigers.

The final Wilson score of the opening quarter came on a 41yard aerial strike from Zabrien Shelburn to Esiah King. The try for two was unsuccessful, giving the host Tigers the commanding 38-0 lead at the end of one quarter of action.

The second-quarter scoring for the Wilson squad came on the defensive side of the field, as Charles Shelburn returned an interception 60 yards to paydirt. Juaquin Rivera ran in the conversion attempt following the defensive score to extend the Tiger lead to 46-0.

Zabrien Shelburn’s 75-yard TD run and successful conversion made it a 54-0 contest, then the freshman QB scampered 13 yards for his fourth rushing score of the game to make it a 60-0 advantage for the host Tigers. The final point of the shutout win came on the Tigers’ first-ever extra-point attempt, as Zechariah Tecumseh split the uprights for the successful PAT kick to complete the 61-point scoring output for the Wilson squad.

Tecumseh’s PAT kick was the first-ever attempt for the Tigers in school history, adding another first in the Wilson football record books.
