Tigers sit alone atop C-3 standings after win over Wesleyan Christian

The Wilson Tiger varsity football team currently sits alone at the top of the District C-3 standings this week following a 26-12 win last Thursday against the Wesleyan Christian Mustangs.

The double-digit victory puts the Tigers at 4-0 in the district standings, one game ahead of Wesleyan Christian, Coyle, and Watts, who are tied for second at 3-1. The win over Wesleyan Christian last Thursday put the Wilson squad at 6-1 overall on the year, heading into this Friday’s road game at Bluejacket, who is currently 1-6 on the year and 1-4 in district play.

Friday’s road district battle with Bluejacket is set for a 7 p.m. start time.

In last Thursday’s home district meeting with Wesleyan Christian, the first 12 minutes of action became a defensive battle between both squads, as neither team was able to find the end zone in the opening frame for a 0-0 deadlock.

The Tigers ended the scoreless tie in the second quarter on a 20-yard pass from Zabrien Shelburn to Keshon Shelburn. The try for two was unsuccessful to give the Wilson squad the narrow 6-0 halftime lead.

The scoring went back and forth in the third quarter with the host Tigers doubling their lead to 12-0 on a 52yard TD run by Zabrien Shelburn.

The visitors found their way onto the scoreboard in the third stanza on a 20-yard pass play, cutting the Wilson lead in half, 12-6, then Zion Shelburn’s 43-yard TD run and Juaquin Rivera’s successful conversion run made it a 20-6 advantage for the host Tiger squad.

Wesleyan Christian made it a 2012 contest with a 10-yard TD pass in the third quarter, while Zabrien Shelburn’s 41-yard aerial strike to Keshon Shelburn in the final frame put the finishing touches on the Tigers’ 26-12 First Quarter Second Quarter Third Quarter victory.
