Eagles drop district meeting with Sperry
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

The Morris Eagle varsity football team remained winless in district play following a 33-12 loss to the Sperry Pirates this past Friday night.

The Morris Eagle varsity football team remained winless in district play following a 33-12 loss to the Sperry Pirates this past Friday night.

The double-digit setback drops the Eagles to 2-5 on the year and 0-4 in district play, putting the Morris squad in a tie for seventh in the 2A-7 standings with county rivals Okmulgee, who also dropped to 0-4 in district play last Thursday with a 54-22 loss at Beggs.

The Eagles will look to break their current 4-game losing streak this Friday at home against the Westville Yellowjackets, who are currently 1-3 in district play and 1-6 on the year.

Kickoff for Friday’s district battle with Westville is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Larry Bookout Field in Morris.

In Friday’s district meeting with Sperry, the Morris squad opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 2-yard plunge by Trey Daniels. The try for two was unsuccessful, giving the Eagles a 6-0 advantage after the first 12 minutes of action.

Sperry took a 12-6 lead into the halftime break following an 8-yard TD run and 4-yard TD pass in the second quarter.

Morris opened the second half scoring with a 33-yard scamper by Daniels in the third quarter. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful to deadlock the score at 12-12.

Sperry regained the lead, 19-12, with a 7-yard TD pass and successful PAT kick later in the third frame, then scored twice in the final 12 minutes of regulation on a 27-yard run and 47-yard pass, to put the game out of reach. The Pirates made good on both extra-point kick attempts to hand the Eagles the 33-12 setback.
