Preston announces varsity basketball schedule
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

Pirates, Lady Pirates open 2023-2024 campaign Nov. 3 at Okarche

The varsity basketball program at Preston High School had the privilege of competing at the Class 2A state basketball championships in Oklahoma City last season.

The Pirates reached the semifinals before suffering a heartbreaking 7270, overtime, loss to Oklahoma Christian Academy, while the Lady Pirates dropped their opening-round meeting with Pawhuska by a 55-30 margin.

The Preston cage squads will begin their journey to a possible second- straight state tournament appearance in three weeks – November 3 – at Okarche, who also had both basketball teams compete for a state crown in 2022-2023.

Seven days later, the Pirates and Lady Pirates will travel to Dale High School for a showdown with the defending Class 2A state champion Dale Pirates and Lady Pirates.

After the Class 2A battle with Dale, the Preston cage squads will enjoy small break, returning to the basketball gym December 1 with a trip to South Coffeyville for a showdown with the Oklahoma Union Cougars and Lady Cougars.

The remaining regular-season schedule for the Pirates and Lady Pirates in December will feature road games at Kellyville (Dec. 12), and Eufaula (Dec. 18) and competing at the Savanna Tournament (Dec. 11-16).

The home opener for the Preston cage squads is scheduled for January 2, 2024, against Okmulgee County rival Morris.

The other regular-season home opponents for the Pirates and Lady Pirates in 2023-2024 are Dale (Jan. 9), Beggs (Jan. 12), Kellyville (Jan. 23), Henryetta (Jan. 30), Eufaula (Feb. 6), and Oklahoma Union (Feb. 8), while the remaining road trips this season will be at Morris (Jan. 26), Beggs (Feb. 2), Wewoka (Feb. 9), and Henryetta (Feb. 12).

The Preston cage squads will compete in two tournaments in January – the Mike Kerr Classic in Morrison (Jan. 4-6) and the Muscogee Nation Invitational Tournament (Jan. 18-20).

The Class 2A postseason will begin with district tournament action February 15-17, followed by the regional tournament February 22-24 and the area tournament February 29-March 2.

The Class 2A state basketball championships are scheduled to take place March 5-9 at the Jim Norick State Fairgrounds Arena in Oklahoma City.

Below is the complete regular-season schedule for the Preston varsity basketball program for the 20232024 campaign.
