Tigers remain atop C-3 standings with rout of Oaks-Mission
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

The Wilson Tiger varsity football team earned its second-straight District C-3 win this past Friday night at home against the visiting Oaks-Mission Warriors.

The Wilson Tiger varsity football team earned its second-straight District C-3 win this past Friday night at home against the visiting Oaks-Mission Warriors.

The Tigers found the end zone in all three aspects of the game on Friday and walked off their home field with a 60-0 victory in a contest that ended on the 45-point mercy rule at halftime.

The Mercy-Rule win over Oaks-Mission puts the Wilson squad at 4-1 on the year and atop the C-3 standings with a spotless 2-0 record, along with Watts and Wesleyan Christian.

The Tigers will look to keep their unblemished district record intact this Friday with a trip to Copan and a showdown with the Copan Hornets, who are currently 1-1 in district play.

Kickoff for Friday’s district contest at Copan is scheduled for 7 p.m.

In last Friday’s rout of Oaks-Mission, the host Tigers opened the scoring on the very first play of the game, as Zion Shelburn returned the opening kickoff 80 yards to paydirt. A successful run by Charles Shelburn on the conversion attempt gave the Wilson squad the early 8-0 advantage.

The next Tiger score in the opening frame came on a 70-yard run by Zabrien Shelburn. The try for two was unsuccessful, pushing the Wilson lead to 14-0.

The final two Wilson scores in the first quarter came on TD passes of 48 and 22 yards, respectively, from Zion Shelburn to twin brother Zabrien Shelburn. Zion Shelburn completed conversion passes to Juaquin Rivera and Charles Shelburn, respectively, to give the host Tigers a commanding 30-0 lead after the first 12 minutes of action.

The second quarter scoring began with a 40-yard punt return by Charles Shelburn and successful conversion run by Cody Gryder made it a 38-0 advantage for Wilson. A 7-yard run by Zabrien Shelburn and successful conversion run by Charles Shelburn pushed the Tiger lead to 46-0, while Keshon Shelburn’s 60-yard interception return and Rivera’s successful conversion run extended the Wilson lead to 54-0.

The final Wilson tally in the home contest came on a 40-yard pass from Charles Shelburn to Keshon Shelburn to put the finishing touches on the Tigers’ 60-0 victory.
