Knights suffer district loss to Tahlequah Seq.
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

The Henryetta Golden Knight varsity football team fell to 0-2 in district play this past Friday with a 22-12 loss to the host Tahlequah Sequoyah Indians.

The Henryetta Golden Knight varsity football team fell to 0-2 in district play this past Friday with a 22-12 loss to the host Tahlequah Sequoyah Indians.

The double-digit loss came in the second week of District 2A-5 action at Sequoyah High School in Tahlequah.

The Knights will continue their search for their first district win of 2023 this Friday when they host the Warner Eagles, who are 1-1 in district play following a 26-12 win over Okemah last Friday.

Friday’s district meeting with Warner is scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. at historic Cameron Field in Henryetta.

In last Friday’s district showdown with Tahlequah Sequoyah, the Knights got the scoring started at the 10:48 mark of the opening quarter on a 72-yard scamper by Will Perez. The PAT kick was just off the mark to give the visitors the early 6-0 advantage.

The next Henryetta score came on the defensive side, as David Reid scooped up a Tahlequah Sequoyah fumble at the TS 13 and raced into the end for the defensive score. The try for two was unsuccessful, extending the Knight’s lead to double digits, 12-0, with 7:27 remaining in the first half.

The host Indians got on the scoreboard at the 3:35 mark of the second quarter on a 28-yard field goal attempt by Hudson Hendricks, cutting the Henryetta lead to nine, 12-3, at halftime.

The third quarter became a defensive battle between both teams, as neither squad was able to find the end zone in the stanza to keep the Knights in front by a 12-3 margin with 12 minutes of action remaining in regulation.

With 9:37 left in the contest, the host Indians found the end zone for the first time on a 6-yard TD pass from Jalen Handle to Brody Young. The PAT kick was no good, making it a 12-9 advantage for the visiting Knights.

Tahlequah Sequoyah tallied the go-ahead score at the 2:34 mark on an 8-yard run by Josiah Foreman. Hendricks split the upright with the extra-point try to give the host Indians the 16-12 advantage.

A 3-yard TD run by Kael Dobbins with 1:26 left in regulation put the finishing touches on the Knights’ 22-12 setback.
