Dogs drop Homecoming game to Westville
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

The Okmulgee Bulldog varsity football team remained winless in 2023 following a 56-28 loss to the Westville Yellowjackets this past Friday night.

The latest setback for the Bulldogs came in the second week of District 2A-7 action at historic Harmon Field and spoiled the special night for Okmulgee All-Sports Homecoming Queen Mercedes Cloud, who was crowned during a special cornation ceremony at halftime of Friday’s contest.

The Okmulgee gridiron squad will return to action this Friday night, as they welcome the Kiefer Trojans to town for Week 3 of district action.

Friday’s district battle with Kiefer is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time at historic Harmon Field in Okmulgee.

In last Friday’s district meeting with Kansas, the visitors opened the scoring on a 2-yard TD run by Jadon White in the first quarter. Britton Jacob crossed the goal line on the conversion attempt to give Westville the early 8-0 advantage.

The Bulldogs found the end zone for the first time in the contest in the opening frame on a 40-yard scamper by senior quarterback Joseph Robertson. The extra-point kick was off the mark to cut the deficit to two, 8-6.

Zeke Edmisten’s 11-yard TD run and Mason Cox’s successful conversion run later in the opening quarter extended Westville’s lead to 16-6 after the first 12 minutes of action.

The first score of the second stanza belonged to the host Bulldogs, as Jorden Bolden scampered eight yards to paydirt. Robertson found Larry Yahola in the end zone for the conversion to make it a 16-14 contest.

Westville once again pushed its lead to double digits, 24-14, with a 19-yard TD run and successful conversion run by Cox in the second quarter.

A 44-yard TD pass from Robertson to Bolden, followed by a completion from Robertson to Nolan Yates on the conversion attempt brought the Okmulgee deficit back to two, 24-22, midway through the second frame.

The final tally of the first half came on a 29-yard pass from Jacob to Cox late in the second quarter to send the district contest to the intermission with the Bulldogs trailing by eight, 30-22.

The third quarter belonged solely to the visitors with the Yellowjackets scoring on a 32-yard interception return by Cox, 5-yard run by Cox, and 13-yard pass from Jacob to White. The visitors got a successful conversion run by Cox following the defensive score, but the Okmulgee defense was able to keep the Yellowjackets out of the end zone on the other two conversion attempts to extend their lead to 50-22 after three quarters of action.

The final Bulldog tally of the contest came on a 14-yard TD run by Robertson in the final frame, while a 4-yard run by Westville’s Jacob put the finishing touches on the visitors’ 56-28 decision.
