Dragons rout Arkoma to keep win streak alive
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

The Dewar Dragons needed just one play and 12 seconds to extend their regular-season win streak last Thursday in Arkoma.

The Dewar Dragons needed just one play and 12 seconds to extend their regular-season win streak last Thursday in Arkoma.

A 51-yard run by senior tailback Nevin Corbin and successful conversion run by senior wideout Christian Cargola set the tone in the Dragons’ 52-0 victory over the host Arkoma Mustangs.

The non-district game ended with 7:10 left in the second quarter and the Dewar squad in complete control at 52-0 due to lightning in the area.

The Dragons will seek their 49th-straight regular-season win this Friday night at home against the unbeaten Velma-Alma Comets, who come in with a spotless 4-0 record following a 52-0 win last Thursday at Pioneer-Pleasant Vale. Friday’s non-district battle with Velma-Alma is set for a 7 p.m. start time at Dr. Ted Lewis Stadium in Dewar.

After Nevin Corbin’s opening score and Cargola’s successful conversion run gave the Dewar squad an 8-0 advantage just 12 seconds into last Thursday’s contest, the Dragon tailback raced 60 yards to paydirt at the 9:31 mark of the opening frame for the next Dewar score. Freshman QB Peyton Kilhoffer crossed the goal line on the conversion attempt for a 16-0 Dewar lead.

With 7:11 remaining in the first stanza, Kilhoffer scored the next Dewar touchdown on a 15yard QB Keeper. Nevin Corbin bulldozed his way into the end zone for the conversion attempt for a 24-0 Dewar lead.

The next Dragon score came on the defensive side just 20 seconds later, as Cash Faulkner returned an interception 55 yards to paydirt. Kilhoffer then found Keelan Berry in the end zone for the successful conversion try to extend the Dewar margin to 320.

The final Dewar tally of the opening quarter came at the 4:35 mark on a 4-yard run by Nevin Corbin. Kilhoffer called his own number on the conversion attempt to push the Dewar lead to 40-0 after the first 12 minutes of action.

Kilhoffer’s 10-yard run at 10:25 in the second and Faulkner’s 4-yard scamper at the 7:30 mark brought an end to the Dragon scoring with the game being called 20 seconds later due to a lightning delay and the Dewar gridiron squad in front by a 52-0 margin.
