Postseason journey begins for 5 county squads
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

Dewar to continue non-district schedule in Week 4

Phase 2 of the 2023 varsity football season begins for teams in Classes 6A-A and Class C this week with district action.

The start of district play, which will be used to determine postseason berths, will begin for five of the six Okmulgee County gridiron squads on Friday night.

The lone county team that will continue non-district play in Week 4 will be the Dewar Dragons, who traveled to Arkoma on Thursday, looking to extend their current regular-season win streak, which stands at 47 games.

Last week, only four county teams were in action with all four squads walking away from their Week 3 contests with victories.

Morris and Beggs earned road wins last Friday night, as the Eagles traveled to Haskell and left with a decisive 58-7 win over the host Haskell Hay- makers, while the Demons were at Verdigris High School in Claremore for their non-district showdown with the Verdigris Cardinals, escaping with a narrow 44-36 victory.

The other two county teams in action last week were the Dewar Dragons and Wilson Tigers. The Tigers improved to 2-1 on the year with a 56-28 home victory over the Bowlegs Bison, while the Dragons remained unbeaten on the season at 3-0 with a 58-8 win at home against the Depew Hornets.

The Okmulgee Bulldogs and Henryetta Golden Knights were off last week, having started their 2023 campaigns during ‘Zero Week’ on August 25.

Besides Dewar’s road trip to Arkoma on Thursday, the other county teams that will take to the road in Week 4 will be the Bulldogs, Demons, and Tigers, while the Eagles and Knights will compete in front of their home fans on Friday.

Henryetta will open 2A-5 district action at the friendly confines of Cameron Field against the high-powered Prague Red Devils, who enter the district opener with a spotless 3-0 record, while the Knights sit at 2-1 after non-district play.

Prague began its 2023 season August 25 with a 2912 victory over the Luther Lions, then earned wins over Meeker (28-14) on September 1 and North Rock Creek (34-26) on September 8 to finish its non-district schedule with three-straight wins.

Okmulgee, Beggs, and Morris will begin district play in 2A-7 this week.

The Bulldogs will travel to Tulsa for their district opener against the 2023 Class 2A semifinalist Victory Christian Conquerors. Okmulgee enters the district opener still looking for its first win of 2023, while Victory Christian comes into district play with a 2-1 record following a 67-28 loss to Shiloh Christian (Ark.) two weeks ago. The Conquerors began the 2023 season August 25 with a 33-21 win over Cascia Hall then improved to 2-0 on September 1 with a 58-13 victory over Henryetta.

The Demons will be on the road for the second-straight week, opening district play in Westville against the Westville Yellowjackets, who enter the 2A-7 opener looking for Win No. 1 in 2023 after suffering losses to Gentry, Arkansas (47-22), Lincoln, Arkansas (48-24), and Tahlequah Sequoyah (34-18) in their first three games of the season. Beggs enters the Week 4 road game with a 2-1 record, following last week’s narrow win over Verdigris.

The Eagles will begin 2A-7 play on Friday by welcoming the undefeated Kiefer Trojans to Larry Bookout Field. The Morris squad enters the district opener with a 2-1 record, following last week’s rout of Haskell, while Kiefer comes into the district contest with a spotless 3-0 record following wins over NOAH (62-34), Adair (64-26), and Keys (62-14), respectively.

The Tigers, who finished non-district play with a 2-1 record, will begin their journey towards a possible C-3 district title on Friday with a trip to Coyle and a district showdown with the Coyle Bluejackets, who come into the district opener with a 2-1 record with the lone loss coming on September 1 in a 36-0 setback to the Yale Bulldogs. The two wins for the Bluejackets in 2023 came August 24 against Fox (38-6) and last Thursday against Geary (22-12).

The Dragons were in Arkoma on Thursday for a non-district battle with the Arkoma Mustangs, who enter the Week 4 contest with a 1-2 record. The Mustangs began the 2023 season with a 56-30 win over Midway on September, the suffered back-toback losses to Webbers Falls (60-14) and Wetumka (56-6), respectively, in the last two weeks. Dewar enters the Week 4 meeting with a spotless 3-0 record following last Friday’s Mercy-Rule win over Depew.

Kickoff for the Week 4 contests that involve Okmulgee County teams are scheduled for 7 p.m.
