Dewar captures district crown with pair of run-rule victories over Lady Pirates

For the 23rd time in school history, the Dewar Lady Dragon varsity fastpitch softball team hoisted the district championship plaque on Tuesday evening at Al Kessel Field in Dewar.

The lastest district championship – and first since 2018 – came in Tuesday’s sweep of the visiting Gore Lady Pirates in a Best-of-3 series in the Class A district tournament.

The Lady Dragons, who entered the double-elimination district tournament ranked 7th in Class A, dispatched of the visitors from Sequoyah County in the first two games of the Best-of-3 series by margins of 17-1 and 12-2, respectively.

The district championship win punches the Lady Dragons’ ticket to next week’s Class A regional tournament at a site to be determined by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association.

In Tuesday’s opening district tournament contest, the host Lady Dragons erupted for 13 runs in the bottom of the first, then added four runs in the home half of the second for a dominating 17-0 advantage after two innings of action. The visitors tallied their lone run in the top of the third to award the Dewar ladies the 17-1, runrule, victory.

The top offensive peformer for the Lady Dragons in the opening win was Marti Yaerger, who finished 3 for 3 with two singles, a double, and an RBI.

Alyssa Baughman also recorded a multi-hit game in Tuesday’s opening contest, finishing 2 for 2 with two singles and 4 RBIs.

The other Dewar base hits against Gore came on RBI singles by Kinsey Maldonado, Brooke Thomas, Raygin Thomas, Jaycie Berry, and Jaycee De-Turk and a 2-run double by Bre Harvell.

Other Lady Dragon baserunners in the run-rule win were Harvell (hit by pitch, error), Maldonado (error), Berry (2 walks, RBI), Baughman (RBI walk), DeTurk (hit by pitch), Brooke Thomas (walk, error), Raygin Thomas (walk), and Korbyn Anderson (error).

Brooke Thomas earned the pitching win for Dewar in Game 1, tossing two scoreless no-hit innings of work, striking out three, walking one, and hitting a batter.

Raygin Thomas took over the pitch- ing duties in the third, allowing one run on no hits with one strikeout and two hit batters in her one inning of relief work.

In Tuesday’s second district tournament contest, the Lady Dragons opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, then added five in the second for a 7-0 advantage.

Gore broke the shutout bid with a run in the top of the third, while Dewar plated three runs in the home half of the frame to lead by nine, 10-1, after three innings of action.

After the Lady Pirates made it a 10-2 contest with a run in the top of the fourth, the Lady Dragons put the finishing touches on the district championship victory with two runs in the bottom of the inning for the 12-2 decision.

The Dewar offense was led by the duo of Marti Yaerger (3 for 4, 2 singles, double) and Bre Harvell (3 for 3, 2 singles, double, 5 RBIs) with three hits apiece. One of Harvell’s RBIs came on a sacrifice fly in the 5-run second.

Kinsey Maldonado also recorded a multi-hit game for the Lady Dragons in the title game, finishing 2 for 2 with a pair of singles and an RBI.

The other three Dewar base hits in the championship contest came on a single by Korbyn Anderson, RBI single by Raygin Thomas, and 2-run single by Jaycie Berry.

Other Lady Dragon baserunners in Game 2 were Yaerger (fielder’s choice), Maldonado (walk), Anderson (2 fielder’s choices, RBI), Brooke Thomas (walk, RBI hit by pitch), Raygin Thomas (RBI fielder’s choice), Alyssa Baughman (walk), Brailee England (walk), and Carli Thomason (walk).

Brooke Thomas went the distance in the circle for Dewar to earn the pitching win, allowing two runs on five hits with two walks, five strikeouts, and two hit batters in four innings of work.
