Tigers ‘corral’ Bowlegs in non-district finale
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

Bison see double in Wilson’s 56-28 victory

The Wilson Tiger varsity football team welcomed to the Bowlegs Bison to the Tiger Den last Thursday night for the non-district finale for both gridiron squads.

The host Tigers fell into a double-digit deficit in the opening quarter, then caught fire in the second period, sparking a 56-28 victory for the host Wilson squad.

During the final three quarters of action last Thursday, the visiting Bison had a bad case of ‘Double Vision’ as the Tigers used a little bit of ‘Twin Magic’ in scoring 56 points in three frames.

The Bison’s ‘Double Vision’ was courtesy of the freshmen duo of Zion and Zabrien Shelburn, who accounted for all eight touchdowns in the Tigers’ 28-point win.

The home victory sends the Wilson squad into this Friday’s Class C-3 district opener at Coyle with a 2-1 season record.

Friday’s district contest at Coyle is set for a 7 p.m. start time.

In last Thursday’s non-district finale against Bowlegs, the visitors opened the scoring at the 9:37 mark of the first quarter on a 31-yard TD pass from Hudson Jasna to Cayden Miller.

The Bison increased their lead to 8-0 with 6:30 left in the opening frame when the snap on a punt attempt sailed over the Wilson punter’s head and landed out of the back of the end zone for a 2-point safety.

An 18-yard TD pass from Jasna to Jacob Lewis and successful conversion run by Dillon Sullivan at the 4:05 mark of the opening stanza gave the visitors a 16-0 advantage after the first 12 mintues of action.

Twelve seconds into the second quarter, the Tigers found their way onto the scoreboard on a 22-yard run by Zion Shelburn, cutting the deficit to 16-6.

With 8:35 remaining in the first half, Zion Shelburn completed a 38yard TD pass to Zabrien Shelburn for the next Wilson score. Ethan Cullum crossed the goal line on the conversion try to make it a 16-14 contest.

Zabrien Shelburn gave the host Tigers their first lead of the contest at the 3:20 mark of the second, returning an interception 85 yards to paydirt. Zion Shelburn raced into the end zone on the conversion attempt to put the Wilson squad on top by a 22-16 margin.

With 45 seconds left before halftime, Zion Shelburn connected with Zabrien Shelburn on a 40-yard aerial strike to extend the Tigers’ lead to 2816.

On the final play of the first half, Zabrien Shelburn found the end zone for the fourth-straight time in the second quarter, scooping up a Bowlegs fumble at the Bowlegs 45 and racing into the end zone for his second defensive score of the frame. The try for two was unsuccessful, sending the host Tigers into the intermission with a 34-16 advantage.

Zabrien Shelburn opened the third quarter scoring with a 40-yard scamper at the 8:17 mark, pushing the Wilson lead to 40-16.

Bowlegs ended the Tigers’ 40-point performance with a 45-yard pass from Jasna to Jacob Milner with 4:54 left in the third stanza for a 40-22 Wilson advantage with one quarter remaining in regulation.

On the first play of the final frame, Zion Shelburn rocketed 50 yards to paydirt then Zabrien Shelburn crossed the goal line on the conversion attempt to make it a 48-22 contest.

Sullivan’s 8-yard run at the 6:53 mark of the fourth quarter was the final tally for Bowlegs, as Zion Shelburn put the home win on ice for the Tigers with his second 50-yard TD run just seven seconds after the Bowlegs score. Cullum’s successful conversion run put the finishing touches on the Tigers’ 56-28 victory.
