Rex delivers district crown with walkoff HR
Sophomore Serenity Rex delivered the biggest hit of her young high school fastpitch softball career last Thursday evening at the Henryetta high school softball field.
Rex sent a 1-0 delivery over the center-field wall for a game-winning 2-run home run. The walkoff blast came with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and gave the Henryetta Lady Knights the thrilling 7-5 victory over the visiting Eufaula Lady Ironheads.
The extra-inning win was extra special for Rex and the Lady Knights, as the Henryetta diamond squad was awarded the District 3A-8 championship following the victory and serving as a regional host site this week.
In last Thursday’s district showdown with Eufaula, the visitors jumped out to a 2-0 advantage with a run in each of the second and third innings.
The Lady Knights plated three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead after three innings of action.
After a scoreless fourth, the Lady Ironheads regained the lead, 5-3, with three runs in the top of the fifth.
Henryetta cut the deficit in half, 5-4, with a run in the bottom of the fifth, then deadlocked the score at 5-5 on a 2-out RBI double by Rex in the last of the seventh.
After a scoreless eighth, the Henryetta defense kept the visitors off the scoreboard in the top of the ninth. The contest appeared to be headed to a third extra inning, as the first two hitters were retired on a groundout and pop out. Shelby Kilhoffer put the winning run on base with a single to left, then Rex brought the game to a close with her game-winning 2-run home run to center field.
Rex led the Henryetta offensive attack, finishing 3 for 5 with 4 RBIs. The sophomore slugger began her 3-hit performance with a solo home run in the fifth.
Kilhoffer added a 3-run home run in the third to her 2-out single in the ninth to finish 2 for 5 at the plate for the Lady Knights.
McKayla Greenhaw also recorded a multi-hit game for Henryetta in the thrilling extra-inning win, finishing 2 for 5 with a pair of singles.
The other four Lady Knight base hits last Thursday came on singles by Ailanee Hicks, Winter Beaver, Kinley Miller, and Allie Davis.
Other Henryetta baserunners against Eufaula were Rex (error), Hicks (walk), and Maddie Rock (error, fielder’s choice).
Rex also earned the pitching win for Henryetta last Thursday, allowing five runs on seven hits with three walks, six strikeouts, and three hit batters in nine innings of work.
