Three county teams seek rebound wins in Week 3
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

Dragons aim to keep win streak alive at home against Depew

Week 3 of the 2023 varsity football season will see four of the six Okmulgee County teams in action.

Three of the four county squads in action this week will look to get back in the win column following Week 2 defeats.

The Beggs Golden Demons, Morris Eagles, and Wilson Tigers suffered their first losses of the 2023 campaign last Friday and will aim to get back on the winning track this week with non-district finales for each squad.

The Demons (1-1), who dropped a 35-16 decision to Rejoice Christian last Friday in Beggs, will close out their non-district schedule this Friday with a trip to Verdigris High School in Claremore for a showdown with the Verdigris Cardinals. Verdigris enters the Week 3 contest with an 0-2 record after suffering losses to Sperry (27-20) and Catoosa (33-22) in back-to-back games the past two weeks.

The Eagles (1-1) will look to get back into the win column this week with a trip to Haskell and their non-district finale showdown with the Haskell Haymakers. Morris suffered its first loss of 2023 last Friday at home with a 20-8 setback to arch rival Henryetta. Haskell comes into the Week 3 contest with an identical 1-1 season record, beginning the 2023 campaign on September 1 with a 20-12 win over Caney Valley before suffering its first loss of the season last Friday by a 59-14 margin to the Checotah Wildcats.

The Tigers (1-1) were handed their first loss of the season last Friday 72-26 at Caddo – and were back in action Thursday, hosting their Week 3 opponent, the Bowlegs Bison, who enter the non-district meeting with an indentical 1-1 record. Bowlegs began its 2023 campaign with a 45-38 loss to Olive on August 25, then earned its first win of the season last Friday with a 54-0 shutout victory over the Midway Chargers.

The other county team to be in action in Week 3 will be the Dewar Dragons, who will welcome the Depew Hornets to historic Dr. Ted Lewis Stadium for a non-district contest where the Dragons will aim to extend their current regular-season win streak, which stands at 46 games.

Dewar is currently 2-0 on the year with Mercy Rule wins over Cherokee (52-6) on September 1 and Snyder (60-0) last Friday, while Depew is currently 1-1 in 2023 after beginning the season with a 48-0 win over Maud on August 25 and falling to Drumright by a 60-22 margin on September 1.

While these four county teams will look for wins in Week 3, the other two county squads will take a break from their regular-season schedules this week.

The Okmulgee Bulldogs and Henryetta Golden Knights will enjoy off weeks this week and will use the Bye Week to get better prepared for district play next week with Okmulgee traveling to Tulsa next Friday for a 2A-7 showdown with the high-powered Victory Christian Conquerors and Henryetta traveling to Tahlequah next Thursday for a 2A-5 battle with the Tahlequah Sequoyah Indians.
