Preston edges Dewar to win Mounds Tourney
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

Wilson finishes 4th, Beggs 7th at 2-day event

Four Okmulgee County varsity fastpitch softball teams competed this past weekend at the Mounds Softball Tournament.

The Preston Lady Pirtates captured the tournament championship with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over county foe, the Dewar Lady Dragons, in Saturday’s title contest.

The Wilson Lady Tigers and Beggs Lady Demons also competed at the 2-day event, coming away with fourth and seventh-place finishes, respectively.

The Lady Tigers took home fourth place after an 8-4 loss to the Kellyville Lady Ponies, while the Lady Demons began Saturday’s tournament action with a narrow 7-6 win over Liberty (Mounds) in the seventh-place game.

The Lady Pirates earned their spot in the title game with wins over Beggs (14-0), Wilson (19-0), and Dewar (10-1), respectively.

The Lady Dragons began their tournament action last Thursday with a 15-4 rout of the host Mounds Lady Eagles, then reached the winner’s bracket semifinals with a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Kellyville Lady Ponies.

The Dewar diamond squad rebounded from their semifinal loss to Preston with another narrow win (11-10) over the Lady Ponies in the loser’s bracket finals.

The Lady Tigers began their tournament participation Thursday with a narrow 2-1 victory over the Inola Lady Longhorns. After the loss to Preston in the winner’s bracket quarterfinals, the Wilson squad had its tournament participation come to a close with the loser’s bracket semifinal loss to Kellyville, which ended on a walkoff Grand Slam home run in the bottom of the sixth in a contest that went into international tie breaker after five innings due to expiration of 75-minute time limit.

The Lady Demons fell into the seventh-place game with back-to-back losses to Preston (14-0) and Inola (14-2), respectively, last Thursday.

Beggs’ seventh-place foe dropped its first two tournament games to Kellyville (8-0) and the host Mounds Lady Eagles (21-2), respectively, last Thursday.
