Morris-Henryetta showdown highlights Week 2 schedule
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

Bulldogs continue search for first win Friday vs. Tulsa Central

Week 2 of the 2023 varsity football schedule will feature tough challenges for all six Okmulgee County squads on Friday night.

The highlight of Week 2’s schedule involving county teams will be the annual meeting between the Morris Eagles and Henryetta Golden Knights.

The county showdown between the rivals will take place at Larry Bookout Field in Morris and will be a battle for the prestigious Walker Cup – a traveling trophy to honor the late John Walker, who served as an administrator and football coach at both county schools. Morris captured the inaugural Walker Cup last year with an 1815 victory in Henryetta and will be looking to keep the trophy on campus with a second-straight win over its arch rival. The annual county battle will be the 20th meeting with the Eagles holding a 13-7 margin.

The Eagles enter the Week 2 contest with a 1-0 record following last week’s 56-12 season-opening win over Kellyville, while the Knights come into the county battle with a 1-1 record, beginning the 2023 season August 25 with a 40-32 victory over Hartshorne then suffering a 58-13 setback to Victory Christian last week in Henryetta.

The other scheduled games for Okmulgee County teams in Week 2 are as follows:

• Okmulgee vs Tulsa Central

• Beggs vs Rejoice Christian

• Dewar at Snyder

• Wilson at Caddo The Bulldogs will close out their non-district schedule Friday with a home meeting with the Tulsa Central Braves. Okmulgee enters the Week 2 contest with an 0-2 record with losses to Star Spencer (18-0) and Antlers (30-14), respectively, and will look to earn its first win of 2023 Friday against a very tough Tulsa Central squad, who comes in with a 1-1 record. The Braves began 2023 with a 34-0 loss to Tulsa McLain on August 25, then defeated Tulsa Memorial last week by a 26-0 margin for their first win of the season.

The Demons began the season last Friday with a 48-0 win at home against the Hugo Buffaloes and will look for their second-straight win of 2023 on Friday in a non-district game at home against the Rejoice Christian Eagles, who enter the Week 2 contest with a 1-1 record. Rejoice Christian began its 2023 campaign August 25 with a 59-0 win over Cashion then dropped a 3923 decision to Cascia Hall last Friday in Owasso.

The Dragons will look to extend their regular-season win streak on Friday with a trip to Snyder for a non-district showdown with the Snyder Cyclones. Dewar began the 2023 season last Friday with a 52-6 win over Cherokee, while Snyder enters the Week 2 contest with an 0-1 record after opening the 2023 campaign with a 52-6 loss to Caddo on August 25.

The Tigers will seek their second-straight 2-0 start on Friday with a trip to Caddo and a non-district battle with the high-powered Caddo Bruins. The Wilson squad kicked off its 2023 season last Friday with a hard-fought 26-18 home win over Graham-Dustin. Caddo enters the Week 2 showdown with a spotless 2-0 record after wins over Snyder (52-6) and Davenport (60-14), respectively.

Kickoffs for Week 2 contests involving Okmulgee County gridiron squads is set for 7 p.m.
