Eagles‘ground’ Kellyville in 2023 opener
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

Morris uses successful run attack in 56-12 victory

The Morris Eagle varsity football team used a balanced scoring attack in last Friday’s season opener at Kellyville.

The Eagle offense found the end zone a total of eight times, six of which came on the ground, in the Morris squad’s 56-12 victory over the host Kellyville Ponies.

The 44-point win last Friday was the largest win margin for the Eagles since defeating Tulsa Webster by 40 points (59-19) on September 17, 2020, in Tulsa.

The Morris squad will look to continue its winning ways this Friday night when they welcome their arch rivals, the Henryetta Golden Knights, to town for the 2nd Annual Walker Cup showdown.

Friday’s county battle is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m. at Larry Bookout Field in Morris.

In Friday’s season opener in Kellyville, the Eagles opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 20-yard pass from Koen Burgess to Trey Daniels. The duo then hooked up on a 44-yard aerial strike later in the opening frame to double the Morris lead to 12-0.

The Eagles’ first-quarter scoring ended with a 19-yard scamper by Jaylen Zackery and successful conversion run by Burgess to give Morris a commanding 20-0 advantage after the first 12 minutes of action.

Cruze Lawson’s 4-yard TD run and Zackery’s successful conversion run began the second quarter and extended the Morris lead to 28-0.

Kellyville made it a 28-6 contest later in the second stanza on a 32-yard pass from Asher Thornbrue to Wyatt Stotts.

Burgess sent the Eagles to the halftime break with a 36-6 advantage following a 2-yard TD run and successful conversion run. Morris opened the second-half scoring with a 13-yard TD run by Lawson in the third quarter for a 42-6 lead.

Kyle Hillsberry returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards to paydirt to make it a 42-12 contest.

Daniels put the finishing touches on the Eagles’ dominating season-opening win by TD runs of 28 and 72 yards, respectively, in the third quarter. The senior crossed the goal line on the conversion attempt following his second rushing touchdown of the frame, to award the Morris squad the 56-12 victory.
