Dragons begin 2023 with 52-6 win over Cherokee
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

Dewar extends regular season win streak to 45 with Mercy Rule victory

The last time the Dewar Dragons were on the football field, they found themselves on the losing end of a 46-0 decision to Oklahoma Bible Academy in the quarterfinals of the Class B playoffs.

The quarterfinal loss snapped an 84-game scoring streak for the Dragons.

The Dewar varsity gridiron squad needed just 6 minutes, 22 seconds to begin another scoring streak this past Friday night in its 2023 season opener against the Cherokee Chiefs.

A 2-yard run by Christian Cargola at the 5:38 mark of the first quarter ended a 53-minute, 36-second scoreless streak for the Dragons.

The short-yardage score sparked a 52-6 victory for the host Dewar squad with the Mercy Rule extending the Dragons’ regular-season winning streak to 45 games.

Dewar will look to extend its regular-season win streak this Friday when the Dragons travel to Snyder to battle the Snyder Cyclones in the Dewar squad’s second non-district contest of 2023.

Kickoff for Friday’s non-district battle with Snyder is set for 7 p.m. at Snyder High School.

In Friday’s season-opening win over Cherokee, Cargola’s short TD run, followed by a successful conversion run by Nevin Corbin gave the host Dragons the early 8-0 advantage, then Corbin broke off back-to-back 50-plus TD runs to finish Dewar’s 3-score total in the opening frame. The senior tailback’s first long-distance score went for 57 yards at the 4-minute mark to make it a 14-0 Dewar lead, then raced 54 yards to paydirt at 1:16 in the first for a 20-point margin. Keelan Berry’s successful conversion run increased the Dragons’ advantage to 22-0 after the first 12 minutes of action.

The first Dewar score of the second stanza came on a 40-yard scamper by Kade Henderson just 50 seconds into the frame. Henderson’s score came after the senior center scooped up a Dewar fumble on a run play at the Cherokee 40. The conversion attempt was successful, as freshman quarterback Peyton Kilhoffer found Naea Corbin in the end zone for the 2-point score, pushing the Dragons’ lead to 30-0 with 11:50 remaining in the first half.

Nevin Corbin found the end zone for a third time in the first half, rocketing 41 yards to paydirt at the 8:55 mark. Cash Faulkner crossed the goal line on the conversion attempt to make it a 38-0 Dewar advantage.

The final Dragon score of the second quarter came on a 5-yard run by Wesley Sanford with 3:59 remaining in the frame. Haiden Kaler connected with Andrew Paden on the conversion attempt to push the Dewar lead to 46-0.

The visitors broke up the shutout with a 24-yard TD run by Xander Jackson with 53 seconds left in the second quarter. Jackson’s TD run sent the contest into the halftime break with Dewar in complete control, 466.

The season-opening win for Dewar came to a close on the 45-point Mercy Rule at 10:55 of the third quarter on a 1-yard TD run by Remy Martin.
