Homeless Shelter seeks assistance
By PATRICK FORD NEWS EDITOR,

Client numbers increase

The Okmulgee County Homeless Shelter continues to see increased numbers of clients being served, and is in need of food assistance.

Executive Director Brenda Brewer stated the shelter is housing over 30 people, both individuals and families, and food supplies, especially protein, is much needed.

“What really, really are in need of meat of all kinds,” Brewer said. “Hamburger meat mostly, along with chicken, roast, hams, turkeys, and even canned chicken and tuna, because we make a lot of sandwiches.”

Potatoes, bread, chips, along with condiments such as mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, salad dressing are greatly appreciated. Donations of ready-made chili, hot dogs are also desired for the clients.

“And always salad ingredients – cucumbers, lettuce, tomato, etc. – so we can provide healthy items for our clients,” Brewer said.

The shelter has a ‘house full,’ the director stated, which results in even more meals being prepared for those in need.

Canned goods are appreciated, but the proteins are the most urgent need at the time.

“Any and all assistance, whether through actual donations or monetary, are appreciated,” Brewer said. “The Okmulgee community, businesses and individuals, have always been gracious in their assistance to help us – and that is not taken lightly – by myself, the board of directors and the many clients we have served over the years,” “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you all for everything you do to help, not only us, but our clients, to get back on their feet.”

The community is also thanked for their support by shopping at the OCHS Thrift Store.

The Okmulgee County Homeless Shelter is a non-profit 501c(3) established in 1995, serving the Okmulgee, McIntosh, Hughes and Okfuskee Counties. It is the only homeless shelter within a 45-mile radius serving these four counties. The agency is funded through contributions, fundraisers, OCHS Thrift Store revenue and various grants.

The shelter is located at the corner of 4th and Morton, and can be reached at 918-756-9098 for more information.
