Lady Dragons rout Keota for lastest win
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

The Dewar Lady Dragon varsity fastpitch softball team continued their winning ways this past Tuesday with a 14-0 victory over the Keota Lady Lions in Keota.

The run-rule win pushed the Lady Dragons’ season record to 5-0, heading into Thursday’s 2-game participation at the Wilson Lady Tiger Fastpitch Festival. The Dewar squad will also compete at the Wilson Festival on Friday with a 2-game schedule.

Prior to the shutout win over Keota, the Lady Dragons improved to 4-0 on the season with double- digit wins over Wetumka (14-4) and Checotah (10-0) last Thursday and Friday, respectively.

After the Wilson Softball Festival, the Dewar squad will host Weleetka on Monday and return to Wilson Tuesday for a county showdown with the host Wilson Lady Tigers.

In Tuesday’s road battle with Keota, the Lady Dragons began the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first. The Dewar squad added four in the second and eight in the third to put the finishing touches on the Lady Dragons’ 14-run performance.

The Dewar defense held the host Lady Lions in check in the bottom of the third to complete the 140, run-rule, road win.

Marti Yaerger led the offensive attack for the Lady Dragons on Tuesday, finishing 2 for 3 with a single, home run, and 4 RBIs. Yaerger’s home run came on a 3-run blast in the second. Yaerger also reached base on a Keota error in the contest.

Bre Harvell (2 for 3, 2 singles, 2 RBIs) and Alyssa Baughman (2 for 2, single, double, 2 RBIs) also recorded multi-hit games against Keota with two hits each.

The other three Dewar base hits in the road win came on RBI singles by Brooke Thomas and Jaycie Berry and an RBI triple by Kinsey Maldonado.

Other Lady Dragon baserunners agains Keota were Baughman (walk), Maldonado (walk), Berry (walk), Brooke Thomas (error), Raygin Thomas (walk), Korbyn Anderson (fielder’s choice), and Jaycee DeTurk (walk).

Brooke Thomas went the distance in the circle to earn the pitching win for Dewar, striking out three and walking one, while allowing just two hits in three shutout innings of work.
