Lady Dragons open fastpitch campaign with run-rule wins

The Dewar Lady Dragon varsity fastpitch softball team kicked off their 2023 season Tuesday evening with a pair of run-rule victories.

The Lady Dragons began the campaign with a 12-0, shutout, win over the Rejoice Christian Lady Eagles, then improved to 2-0 on the season later on Tuesday with a 12-2 victory over county foe, the Okmulgee Lady Bulldogs.

The Dewar diamond squad was scheduled to return to action Thursday at home against Wetumka and are scheduled to host Checotah on Friday.

The Lady Dragons will begin Week 2 of their 2023 campaign this Monday at home against Porum.

In Tuesday’s season opener against Rejoice Christian, the Dewar ladies opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first. The Lady Dragons then added five runs in each of the next two innings to end the contest on the run rule, 120.

The Dewar offense finished with 12 runs on 14 hits in the shutout win with the duo of Marti Yaerger (3 for 3, 2 singles, double, RBI) and Bre Harvell (3 for 3, 2 singles, double, 3 RBIs) leading the way with three hits each.

The other multi-hit games for the Lady Dragons against Rejoice Christian came from Raygin Thomas (2 for 3, 2 singles, 2 RBIs), Kinsey Maldonado (2 for 3, single, triple, 2 RBIs), Brooke Thomas (2 for 3, 2 singles, 2 RBIs), and Alyssa Baughman (2 for 2, single, double) with two hits apiece.

Brooke Thomas earned the pitching win for Dewar, striking out seven and walking two in three near-perfect innings of work.

In Tuesday’s county battle with Okmulgee, the visiting Lady Bulldogs opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first.

The host Lady Dragons plated three runs in their half of the inning for a 3-2 advantage, then added two in the second, six in the third, and one in the fourth to complete the run-rule win by a 12-2 decision.

The top hitter for Dewar in the county contest was Marti Yaerger, who finished 3 for 3 with a single, two doubles, and 3 RBIs. Yaerger also drew a walk in her first plate appearance in the county battle.

Other Lady Dragon players with multi-hit games against Okmulgee were Bre Harvell (2 for 2, single, double, RBI, walk) and Jaycee DeTurk (2 for 2, 2 singles, RBI) with two hits apiece.

The other Dewar base hits in the county showdown came on singles by Raygin Thomas and Jaycie Berry and a 2-run single by Brooke Thomas. Raygin Thomas drove in a run in the second with an RBI groundout, while Brooke Thomas had an RBI groundout in the first and Kinsey Maldonado had an RBI sacrifice fly in the third.

Other Lady Dragon baserunners against Okmulgee were Berry (walk), Maldonado (error), Alyssa Baughman (walk), Brailee England (2 walks, RBI), and Sami Lee (walk).

The two Okmulgee base hits came off the bat of Addison Rubic – both singles, including an RBI single in the first.

Other Lady Bulldog baserunners in the county contest were Mercedes Cloud (walk), Natori Yates (walk), Brylee Edlin (walk), Keira Swayze (2 walks), and Lexus Stick (walk).

Raygin Thomas earned the pitching win for Dewar, allowing two runs on two hits, striking out five, walking six, and hitting a batter in four innings of work.

Yates absorbed the pitching loss for Okmulgee, giving up 12 runs on 10 hits with seven walks and one hit batter in three and one-third innings of work.
