Rex blasts Lady Knights into win column in season opener
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

Henryetta sophomore launches 2 HRs in 4-1 victory

Henryetta sophomore Serenity Rex dominated the visiting Vian Lady Wolverines on both sides of the field in Monday’s season-opening fastpitch softball showdown at the Henryetta High School softball field.

Rex blasted a pair of solo home runs and allowed just one run on four hits in helping the host Lady Knights begin 2023 with a 4-1 victory over their Sequoyah County foes.

Rex’s first roundtripper on Monday came with one out in the bottom of the third, doubling the Henryetta lead to 2-0 after three innings of action.

Rex added a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to push the Henryetta advantage to 3-1.

The lone Vian run allowed by the Lady Knight hurler came in the top of the fifth on a 2-out RBI single by starting pitcher Kala Gibbins.

The Lady Knights were back in action Tuesday evening with a trip to Spiro and will close out the first week of the 2023 fastpitch season Thursday-Saturday at the Cushing Tournament.

In Monday’s season opener against Vian, the host Henryetta squad broke a 0-0 tie with a run in the bottom of the second on a 2-out RBI single by Chloe Swearingen.

After the two Rex home runs and Vian’s lone run in the fifth made it a 3-1 contest, the final Lady Knight tally of the season opener came on an RBI single by pinch hitter Shelby Kilhoffer in the bottom of the sixth.

Rex finished 2 for 4 at the plate with her two solo home runs to lead the Henryetta offense. Swearingen added a 2-out single in the fourth to also finish with a multi-hit game for the Lady Knights, going 2 for 3 at the plate.

Besides Kilhoffer’s RBI single in the sixth, the other HHS base hits in Monday’s opener came on singles by Ailanee Hicks, Kinley Miller, Allie Davis, and Maddie Rock and a double by McKayla Greenhaw.
