On July 20, Governor Stitt held a ceremonial bill signing for House Bill 1789 authored by Rep. Chris Banning, R-Bixby.
Banning, a Republican, is in his first term representing House District 24. His district includes Creek, Okmulgee and Tulsa Counties.
HB 1789, an act related to firearms, allows the lawful carrying of firearms by eligible persons as authorized by the provisions of the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act.
“I am thankful for Governor Stitt’s willingness to get this bill across the finish line,” Banning said. “This enhances a person’s right to keep and bear arms, as well as their ability to act in self-defense if needed.”
An eligible person must be in possession of a valid state photo I.D. card, driver’s or handgun license and is in compliance with the Oklahoma Self Defense Act.
This bill has no fiscal impact and will go into effect on Nov. 1.
