Norman finishes tied for 42nd at 3A state golf tournament
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

Henryetta sophomore Brady Norman closed out his first state golf tournament appearance this past Tuesday at Lakeview Golf Course in Ardmore.

Norman finished the 2-day, 54-hole, event with a total of 263, which was good enough for a 4-way tie for 42nd overall – out of 73 total golfers.

The other three golfers to finish the Class 3A state golf championships with 54-hole totals of 263 were Riley Morgan of Eufaula, Sammy McNeil of Kingston, and Caleb Maly of Perry.

The Class 3A team state championship went to Plainview with a 3-round total of 899. Kingfisher was awarded the state runner-up trophy with a 3-round total of 948.

The remaining Top 5 teams at the 2-day event were Lone Grove in third at 978, Pauls Valley in fourth at 982, and Marlow in fifth at 997.

The individual state championship in Class 3A in 2023 went to Christian Heritage’s Christian Johnson, who carded a 3-round total of 216. Johnson actually finished tied for first with Lone Grove’s Bliss Newton, but the top honors went to Johnson, who outdueled Newton in Tuesday’s final round by three strokes – 66 to 69.

Johnson’s teammate Carter Nutt tied Jace Chaney of Plainview for third overall with a 3-round total of 217 with Nutt recording the lowest score of the tournament with a second-round total of 64. As for Norman, the Knight golfer began tournament play Monday by firing an opening-round score of 87, which put the HHS sophomore in a 6-way tie for 38th overall after the first 18 holes. The other five golfers to card 87s in the first round were Parker Green of Pauls Valley, Noah Gracey of Purcell, Ashton Billings of Sulphur, Gabe Doremus of Metro Christian, and Maveric Ashley of Pauls Valley.

Norman had a little difficulty on the second 18 holes on Monday, finishing the second round with a score of 91 for a 2-round total of 178 and a 4-way tie for 44th with Billings, Cade White of Comanche, and Tyler Abeyta of Pauls Valley.

Norman was able to overcome Monday’s sluggish finish on Tuesday with his best round of the 2-day event to finish in the middle of the individual leaderboard.
