The Morris Eagle varsity baseball team had their season come to a close this past Friday with a 12-2 loss to the Claremore Sequoyah Eagles.

The season-ending setback came in the second game of a ‘Best of 3’ series with Claremore Sequoyah in the Class 3A Bi-District Tournament in Claremore.

The Morris diamond squad found themselves with their backs against the wall in their playoff opener, dropping Friday’s opening contest to Claremore Sequoyah by a 7-5 margin. The Eagles finish the 2023 season with a 7-19 record.

In Friday’s opening battle with Claremore Sequoyah, the host Eagles opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first. Morris cut the deficit to two, 3-1, with a run in the top of the second, then went in front by a 4-3 margin with a 3-run third.

Claremore Sequoyah regained the lead, 5-4, with a pair of runs in the last of the fourth, while the visiting Eagles tied the score at 5-5 with a run in the top of the fifth.

The score remained deadlocked at 5-5 until the bottom of the sixth when Claremore Sequoyah pushed across two runs in the frame to retake the lead, 7-5, with one inning of regulation remaining.

The Morris offense was unable to tally any runs in the top of the seventh to suffer the 7-5 defeat.

The Eagles were led offensively by Trey Daniels (2 for 4, 2 singles) and Junior Walls (2 for 3, single, double) with two hits apiece.

The only other Morris base hit in the opening contest came on an RBI single by Koen Burgess.

Burgess went the distance on the mound for the Morris and was handed the pitching loss. Burgess gave up seven runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in six innings of work.

In Friday’s season-ending loss, the Eagles’ two runs came in the bottom of the third.

Claremore Sequoyah opened the scoring with a run in the top of the second, then added seven in the third and four in the fourth for its 12-run total.

Neither team produced any runs in their half of the fifth to hand the Morris squad the season-ending 12-2, run-rule, loss.

The Eagles were limited to two hits in the season-ending setback - a single by Trey Daniels and and an RBI single by James Berry.

Berry got the start on the mound for Morris, absorbing the pitching loss. Berry gave up eight runs on seven hits, striking out one and walking two in two and two-third innings of work.

Daniels worked the final two and one-third innings in relief, allowing four runs on four hits with three strikeouts, three walks, and one hit batsman.
