By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

The Dewar Lady Dragon varsity slowpitch softball team captured their first district championship since 2019 this past Monday evening with an 18-2 win over Cave Springs.

The Lady Dragons began their journey towards their 24th slowpitch district championship with a 16-3 thrashing of the Gans Lady Grizzlies, ending Gans’ 2023 campaign.

The Dewar squad inched closer to the district title by defeating Cave Springs 17-2 in the teams’ first meeting of the 3-team postseason tournament.

The district championship puts the Lady Dragons into next week’s Class A regional tournament at a site to be determined by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association.

In Monday’s playoff opener against Gans, the visitors opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first for an early 1-0 lead.

The Lady Dragons answered with nine runs in the home half of the first, then added seven in the second for a 16-1 advantage.

Gans plated a pair of runs in the top of the third to award the host Dewar squad the 163, run-rule, win.

The Lady Dragons were led offensively by the duo of Bre Harvell (3 for 3, 2 singles, double, 3 RBIs) and Gracie Johnson (3 for 3, single, double, triple, 3 RBIs) with three hits apiece.

Ally Burney (2 for 2, single, triple, 2 RBIs) and Brailee England (2 for 2, 2 singles, RBI) also recorded multi-hit games for Dewar in the opening win with two hits each.

The Lady Dragon defense kept the visitors off the scoreboard in the top of the third to award the Dewar ladies the run-rule win, 17-1.
