Preston to host spring baseball tourney

Annual 3-day event to honor late Pirate player

The annual Preston spring baseball tournament will take place this weekend (April 13-15) at the newly turfed high school baseball field at the Jim Waller Sports Complex in Preston.

This year’s tournament, which will feature eight talented high school baseball teams from across the state, including two from Okmulgee County, will be named the Dawson Sumner Invitational in honor of former Preston baseball player Dawson Sumner, who passed away this past December.

The 3-day tournament will get underway Thursday at 12 p.m. with an opening-round battle between the Haskell Haymakers and Hulbert Riders.

Thursday’s other first-round contests will see the host Preston Pirates take on the Liberty (Mounds) Tigers at 2:30 p.m., the Kellyville Ponies square off against the Gore Pirates at 5 p.m., and Warner and Morris going up against one another in a ‘Battle of the Eagles’ at 7:30 p.m.

Friday’s tournament action will begin with consolation semifinal games at 12 and 2:30 p.m., respectively, followed by the winner’s bracket semifinal contests at 5 and 7:30 p.m., respectively.

Saturday’s tournament schedule will start with the consolation finals at 10 a.m., followed by the third-place game at 12:30 p.m. and the championship contest at 3 p.m.
