Dogs fall in district doubleheader with Sperry
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

The Okmulgee Bulldog varsity baseball team suffered a pair of setbacks to the Sperry Pirates earlier this week.

The Okmulgee Bulldog varsity baseball team suffered a pair of setbacks to the Sperry Pirates earlier this week.

The losses to Sperry came in District 3A-5 action by margins of 5-0 and 15-0, respectively, and puts the Bulldogs at 0-6 in district play and 2-9 overall.

The Okmulgee diamond squad returned to action Thursday with a home meeting with Bristow and are also scheduled to be at home Friday, hosting the Okemah Panthers. In Monday’s battle with Sperry at historic Morgan Field at Bateman Park in Okmulgee, the visitors broke a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the third, then added a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings and two in the seventh for the 5-0 decision.

Daylan Callaway was saddled with the pitching loss for the host Bulldogs, allowing five runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and six walks in six innings of work.

Brandon Simon took over on the mound for Okmulgee in the seventh and gave up one hit, struck out two, and walked one in his one inning of relief.

Tylen Smith was the top hitter for the Bulldogs on Monday, going 2 for 3 with a pair of singles.

The other Okmulgee base hits on Monday came on singles by Jordan Deere, Kevin Washington, and Joseph Robertson, and a double by Ryder Hedges.

In Tuesday’s road trip to Sperry, the Bulldogs were held without a base hit in the contest with the only baserunner being Joseph Robertson, who reached on an error to begin the top of the third.

The host Pirates opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first, then added 12 in their half of the second for the 15-run advantage.

The Okmulgee offense was unable to produce any runs in the top of the third to suffer the run-rule loss.

Alex Gilmour absorbed the pitching loss for the Bulldogs on Tuesday, allowing 12 runs on seven hits, walking four and hitting three in one-plus innings of work.

Brandon Simon took over with no outs and the bases loaded in the second and gave up three runs on four hits with one strikeout and two walks in one inning of relief work.
