Lady Dragons open slowpitch campaign with Wetumka Festival sweep

The Dewar Lady Dragon varsity slowpitch softball team began its 2023 campaign Monday at the Wetumka Slowpitch Festival.

The Dewar Lady Dragon varsity slowpitch softball team began its 2023 campaign Monday at the Wetumka Slowpitch Festival.

The Lady Dragons notched a spotless 4-0 record at the one-day festival, defeating their four opponents by a combined 46-5 margin, including wins over Okmulgee County rivals Wilson and Schulter.

The Dewar ladies began their festival action with a 6-1 victory over the host Wetumka Lady Chieftains. The Lady Dragons then notched double- digit wins over the Wilson Lady Tigers (27-2) and Schulter Lady Bulldogs (17-0) before ending their 4-game schedule Monday with a 6-2 win over the Weleetka Lady Outlaws.

In the opening win over Wetumka, the Lady Dragons opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first.

After Wetumka tallied a run in the home half of the fourth to make it a 3-1 contest, the Dewar ladies extended their lead to 6-1 with three runs in the top of the fifth.

The Dewar defense kept the host Lady Chieftains off the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth to secure the 6-1 victory with the time limit expiring after five innings of action.

The Lady Dragons scattered 15 hits in the season-opening win with six hitters recording multi-hit games. The Dewar batters with two hits each were Bre Harvell (2 for 2, 2 singles), Gracie Johnson (2 for 3, single, double, RBI), Melanie Burney (2 for 3, single, double, RBI), Brailee England (2 for 3, 2 singles, RBI), Jaycee DeTurk (2 for 3, 2 singles), and Alli Burney (2 for 3, 2 singles).

The final three base hits for the Lady Dragons against Wetumka came on a single by Danielle Baker and RBI singles by Kinsey Maldonado and Maikya Carter.

Against Wilson, the Lady Dragons opened the scoring with 13 runs in the top of the first, then tallied 11 in the second and three in the third for their 27-run total. The Lady Tigers tallied their two runs in the bottom of the first.

Gracie Johnson led the Dewar offensive attack in the county battle, going 4 for 4 with a single, three doubles, and 3 RBIs.

Kinsey Maldonado (3 for 4, single, 2 doubles, 4 RBIs), Melanie Burney (3 for 4, double, 2 home runs, 6 RBIs), Jaycee DeTurk (3 for 3, single, double, triple, RBI), Maikya Carter (3 for 3, single, double, home run, 4 RBIs), Sami Lee (3 for 3, single, 2 doubles, 3 RBIs), and Danielle Baker (3 for 3, 3 singles, 2 RBIs) were next offensively for the Lady Dragons with three hits each.

Carter’s home run came on a 3-run shot in the second, while Melanie Burney’s roundtrippers came on a 3-run blast in the first and a 2-run shot in the third.

Other Dewar batters with multiple hits in the county contest were Bre Harvell (2 for 3, single, double, 2 RBIs), Brailee England (2 for 3, 2 singles, RBI), and Ally Burney (2 for 3, single, double, RBI) with two hits apiece.

The final two hits for the Lady Dragons against Wilson came on a single by Paige Baker and double by Tori Hill - both pinch hits in the third.

Against Schulter, the Lady Dragons opened the scoring with 13 runs in the home half of the first, then added four in the second for the shutout win.

Kinsey Maldonado led the way offensively for Dewar in the county contest, going 3 for 3 with a pair of singles, double, and 4 RBIs.

Bre Harvell also had a 3-hit game against Schulter, going 3 for 3 with a pair of singles, a triple, and 2 RBIs.

Other Dewar batters with multiple hits in the county battle were Gracie Johnson (2 for 3, single, double, RBI), Melanie Burney (2 for 3, single, double, RBI), Jaycee DeTurk (2 for 3, single, double, 4 RBIs), Maikya Carter (2 for 3, 2 singles, 2 RBIs), Brailee England (2 for 2, 2 singles), and Danielle Baker (2 for 2, 2 singles, RBI) with two hits apiece.

The final base hit for the Lady Dragons came on a 2-run double by Ally Burney.

Against Weleetka, the Dewar ladies plated five runs in the top of the first for an early 5-0 advantage.

The Lady Dragons tacked on a run in their half of the second for a 6-run lead after one and one-half innings of action.

Weleetka plated its two runs in the third and fourth innings, respectively, while neither team tallied any runs in the fifth to end the contest on the time limit with Dewar in front, 6-2.

Maikya Carter led the way offensively for the Lady Dragons against Weleetka, going 3 for 3 with a pair of singles, a home run, and 3 RBIs. Carter’s roundtripper came on a 3-run blast in the 5-run first.

Kinsey Maldonado also went 3 for 3 for Dewar in the final game of the festival with three singles and an RBI The quartet of Gracie Johnson (2 for 3, single, double), Melanie Burney (2 for 3, 2 singles, RBI), Jaycee DeTurk (2 for 3, single, double, RBI), and Ally Burney (2 for 2, single, double) also recorded multi-hit games against Weleetka with two hits apiece.

The final two Dewar hits against Weleetka came on singles by Bre Harvell and Brailee England.
