Preston sweeps road meeting with Eufaula
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

The Preston varsity basketball program came away with a road sweep this past Tuesday in Eufaula.

The Preston varsity basketball program came away with a road sweep this past Tuesday in Eufaula.

The Lady Pirates (ranked 5th in Class 2A) began the evening with a 42-23 victory, while the Pirates (ranked 2nd in 2A) capped off the road sweep with a dominating 61-31 decision in the nightcap.

The Preston cage squads will close out this week’s 3-game schedule with back-to-back home games against Wewoka and Beggs. The PHS squads will welcome the Wewoka Tigers and Lady Tigers to the Jim Waller Event Center on Friday, then will host their arch rivals, the Beggs Golden Demons and Lady Demons, on Saturday.

In Tuesday’s girls game, the Lady Pirates blanked the host Lady Ironheads 11-0 in the opening quarter, then outscored their foes 12-1 in the second frame for a commanding 23-1 halftime lead.

The Preston ladies took the third period by a slim 11-10 margin to extend their lead to 34-11 with eight minutes left in regulation.

Eufaula came out of the final frame with a 12-8 advantage, but it was the visiting Lady Pirates that walked away with the 42-23 victory.

Jadyn Roberts led Preston in the double-digit win with a game-high 17 points. Other Lady Pirate scorers on Tuesday were Adrianne Wilson with seven, Emilie Stidman six, Ashlynn Foster and Shaunassi Jordan four each, and Taylan Starr and Pheobey Finch two apiece.

In Tuesday’s boys contest, the Pirates came out of the first eight minutes of action with a 16-6 advantage, then went to their locker room at halftime ahead by 16 points (34-18) after taking the second quarter by an 18-12 margin.

The Preston gentlemen took the final two frames by margins of 12-9 and 13-4, respectively, to put the finishing touches on the convincing 61-31 victory.

Four Pirate players tallied double- digit scoring in the lopsided win, led by Jervais Goree with 12 points. Keyton Smith and Malachi Ligons were next offensively for the Preston gentlemen with 11 points apiece, followed by Giorgio Dunn-Spencer with 10.

The remaining Pirates scorers against Eufaula were Tucker Webb with six, Kareffren Bagby four, Pheonix Finch three, and Markel Holloway and Jayden Smith two each.
