Okmulgee cagers split home meeting with Wewoka

The Okmulgee varsity basketball program earned a split decision with the Wewoka Tigers and Lady Tigers this past Friday at historic Brock Memorial Gymnasium in Okmulgee.

The Okmulgee varsity basketball program earned a split decision with the Wewoka Tigers and Lady Tigers this past Friday at historic Brock Memorial Gymnasium in Okmulgee. The Lady Bulldogs remained winless on the season with a 53-23 loss in the opening contest, while the host Bulldogs improved to 9-5 on the year with an 89-17 victory in the nightcap. The Okmulgee cage squads were back in action Saturday with a county showdown with the Beggs Golden Demons and Lady Demons. (See today’s edition for complete details of Saturday’s county battle in Okmulgee.} In Friday’s girls contest, the Lady Bulldogs were outscored 16-4 in the first eight minutes of action and went into halftime down by 15 points, 2611, after being edged 10-7 in the second period. Wewoka took the third quarter by a 20-8 margin to increase Okmulgee’s deficit to 27 (46-19), heading into the final frame of regulation, then were edged 7-4 in the final quarter to wind up on the short end of a 53-23 outcome. Skye Sanders led the offensive attack for the Lady Bulldogs with 11 points. The other scoring for the Okmulgee squad came on six points each by Tori James and Mellani Blackbear. In Friday’s boys meeting with Wewoka, the Bulldogs came out of the opening period with a 17-5 advantage, then outscored the visitors by a 15-5 margin in the second frame for a commanding 32-10 halftime lead. The Okmulgee gentlemen closed out the decisive home win with margins of 27-4 and 30-3, respectively, in the final two quarters. Jaxsun Fulton led the way offensively for the Bulldogs with a game-high 13 points. Other double-digit scorers for Okmulgee against Wewoka were Darin Miles and Nolan Yates with 12 points each and Calip Harjo 11. Tre Swan just missed double figures with nine points.
