Wilson, Schulter split county battle

The varsity basketball programs from Wilson and Schulter met for the first time in the 2022-2023 season this past Tuesday evening in Schulter.

The varsity basketball programs from Wilson and Schulter met for the first time in the 2022-2023 season this past Tuesday evening in Schulter.

The first roundball meeting between the two Okmulgee County schools was originally scheduled to take place November 17, but was pushed back two months due to the Wilson football team competing in the Class C state playoffs the previous week (November 11).

The two county schools came away with a split decision in Tuesday’s showdown with the Wilson Lady Tigers taking the girls contest by a 52-18 margin, while the host Schulter Bulldogs came out of the boys game on the winning end of a 57-48 outcome.

Both teams were back in action this weekend, competing in the 2023 Muscogee Nation Invitational Tournament. Wilson was part of the Large School tournament field, beginning participation Thursday against topseed Preston, while Schulter was part of the Small School tournament field and are scheduled to battle Davenport Friday in Preston and Dewar Saturday in Henryetta.

In Tuesday’s girls county battle, the visiting Lady Tigers took the opening frame by a 22-5 margin, then outscored their rivals 15-2 and 11-4, respectively, in the middle quarters for a 48-11 Wilson lead.

The host Lady Bulldogs escaped the final frame with a narrow 7-4 advantage to make the final tally, 52-18, in favor of the Wilson Lady Tigers.

Wilson was led offensively by Janelle Proctor, who finished with a gamehigh 22 points. Gracie Bear also reached double figures for the Lady Tigers with 10 points.

Other Wilson scorers in the county meeting were Kailee Branson and Jaslene Proctor with six each, Marah Shanks four, and Uven Yang and Jayda Pinkston two apiece.

The host Lady Bulldogs were led in scoring by Caidence Campbell with six points, followed by Macee Henderson and Addiemae Kanada with four each, Payton Campbell three, and Makayla Weeks one.

In Tuesday’s boys county meeting, the host Bulldogs emerged from the opening frame with a narrow 11-9 advantage. Both teams tallied five points in a low-scoring second period to send the squads to their respective locker room with Schulter still leading by two, 16-14, at halftime.

Schulter took the third quarter by a 22-14 margin to extend its lead to double digits, 38-28, heading into the final eight minutes of action.

The visiting Tigers attempted to overcome the 10-point deficit in the final stanza, putting up 20 points. The host Bulldogs countered with 19 points in the final period to walk away with the 57-48 decision.

Kenta Carder was one of three Schulter players to finish in double figures in the contest with a game-high 18 points. Kameron Vinyard and Bobby Calhoun also tallied double-digit scoring for the host Bulldogs with 16 and 15 points, respectively.

The remaining scoring for Schulter on Tuesday came on three points each from Vincent Bess and Jordan Freeman and two points from Jordan Horne.

Ryder Herring led a trio of double- digit scorers for Wilson in the county contest, finishing with a teambest 17-point performance. Talan Dobson and Andrew Wilson were the other two Tiger players to reach double figures on Tuesday with 10 points each.

Nick Williams and Bryson Miller rounded out the Wilson scoring against Schulter with eight and three points, respectively.
