Preston sweeps Eufaula

The Lady Pirates began the home sweep with a hard-fought 34-29 victory in the opening contest, then the Pirates closed out the conference battle with a 53-37 decision in the nightcap.

The Preston squads were back in action this weekend, competing at the 2023 Muscogee Nation Invitational Tournament. The Pirates and Lady Pirates - the top seeds in the Large School tournament field - began participation Thursday against Wilson.

In Tuesday’s girls game in Preston, the Lady Pirates escaped the low-scoring first period with a narrow 8-7 advantage. Eufaula knotted the score at 17-17 at halftime by taking the second quarter by a 10-9 margin.

The score remained deadlocked, 27-27, heading into the final eight minutes of regulation after both teams tallied 10 points in the third stanza.

The host Lady Pirates came out of the final frame with a 7-2 advantage to walk away with the 34-29 decision.

The trio of Ashlynn Foster, Adrianne Wilson, and Savannah King led the way offensively for Preston in the home win with six points apiece. Jadyn Roberts was next for the Lady Pirates with five, followed by Josie Cope with four, Shaunassi Jordan three, and Emilie Stidman and Pheobey Finch two each.

In Tuesday’s boys contest, Eufaula came out of the first eight minutes of action with a 9-4 advantage.

The Pirates took a 19-15 lead into halftime following a 15-6 margin in the second stanza.

After both teams put up 10 points in the third period to make it a 29-25 contest, the Pirates doubled up the visitors 24-12 in the final frame to earn the 53-37 victory.

Jervais Goree was tops offensively for Preston with 16, followed by Malachi Ligons with 12 and Giorgio Dunn-Spencer with 11. Other Pirate scorers against Eufaula were Keyton Smith with seven, Kareffren Bagby four, and Tucker Webb three.
