Preston tops Henryetta in county cage showdown

The Preston varsity basketball program earned a pair of double-digit wins over their county rivals from Henryetta Tuesday evening at the Jim Waller Event Center in Preston.

The Preston varsity basketball program earned a pair of double-digit wins over their county rivals from Henryetta Tuesday evening at the Jim Waller Event Center in Preston.

The host Lady Pirates, fresh off their sweep of the Mike McKee Classic in Morrison last weekend, improved to 11-2 on the year with a 73-20 victory over the visiting Henryetta Lady Knights in Tuesday’s opening contest.

The host Pirates improved to 10-3 on the season in the nightcap with an 89-62 decision over the Henryetta Golden Knights.

Both county squads will return to action Friday with Preston traveling to Beggs to battle arch rival Beggs, while Henryetta will host arch rival Morris.

In Tuesday’s girls contest, the Lady Pirates took the opening frame by a 23-2 margin, then outscored the visiting Lady Knights 17-3 in the second stanza for a 40-5 halftime advantage.

The Preston ladies extended their lead to 67-8 with eight minutes remaining in regulation following a 27-3 margin in the third quarter.

Henryetta doubled up the host Lady Pirates 12-6 in the final period, but it was Preston that walked off its home floor with the 73-20 decision.

Adrianne Wilson led all scorers with a game-high 26 points. Jadyn Roberts was next for the Lady Pirates, finishing with 16 points, while Savannah King also reached double figures for Preston with 13 points.

Other Lady Pirate scorers in the county battle were Emilie Stidman with eight, Taylan Starr four, and Ashlynn Foster and Pheobey Finch three each.

Brooklyn Baughman was tops offensively for Henryetta with seven points, followed by Allana Lawrence with six, Kassidy Lee four, and Serenity Rex two. Maray Cummings’ free throw in the third period accounted for the only other point for the visiting Lady Knights in the county battle.

In Tuesday’s boys hardwood battle, the scoring went back and forth in the first two quarters with the host Pirates taking both frames by margins of 21-15 and 22-16, respectively, for a 43-31 halftime advantage.

The Preston gentlemen came out of the third period with a 28-15 margin to send the county contest to the final eight minutes of regulation with the Pirates leading 71-46.

The host Preston squad edged their county rivals 18-16 in the final stanza to earn the 89-62 victory.

The top scorer for the victorious Pirates was Jervais Goree with a game-high 30 points. Malachi Ligons was next offensively for Preston with 27, while Giorgio Dunn-Spencer tallied 11 points in his Preston debut.

Other Pirate scorers on Tuesday night were Keyton Smith, Kareffren Bagby, and Jayden Smith with six points apiece, Kaedyn Bagby two, and Kaden Dean one.

The Knights were led in scoring by Nick Hudson with 18, followed by Skylar Greenhaw with 12. Maverix Randleman just missed double-digit scoring for Henryetta with nine points - all coming on three 3-point baskets in the final period.

The remaining scoring for the Knights on Tuesday were seven points from Jordan Short, six points from Austin Palmer, four points from Will Perez, and three points each from Hunter Gobin and Jacob Nail.
