Movement hopes to draw attention to inequality, empowerment
A non-profit organization is seeking input and support from county residents.
Rev. W. R. Casey, president of the Christian Ministers Alliance of Tulsa, announces the formation of the Empowerment Cvil Rights Organization.
The Christian Ministers Alliance has been in existence for over 50 years, with chapters throughout Oklahoma. The Christian Ministers Alliance recently held a program honoring several community leaders including the late Rev. Preston W. Jackson Sr. of Okmulgee.
The reason behind the new movement is to draw attention and seek solutions for a wide range of problems.
Rev. Casey stated the Empowerment organization “will deal with education, deal with family, economic development, along with the issue of police brutality.”
“We want to make a better life for the underserved community,” he said.
Recently, a kick-off for the organization was held at a Unity Service in Tulsa, Rev. Casey said. Members of the board that is being organized include a former Tulsa city councilmember, along with pastors and community advocates, but representation from Okmulgee County is being sought.
He stated there were several residents of Okmulgee who attended and expressed interest in being involved.
“We will also adopt schools all across the State of Oklahoma,” Rev. Casey said, adding that part of the work of the organization will be assisting residents with food, and resources to assist those in needs.
The first state board meeting is being planned for sometime in January in Tulsa, and anyone interested in empowering the community and citizens are urged to contact Rev. Casey.
“I would also like to see businesses and corporations to be involved in this movement and share their input with us,” he said. “I have seen the unfairness ‘across the board’ and that needs to be changed.”
Rev. Casey also invites the community to attend the Black Heritage Musical, which is planned for the last Sunday in February. The location and time will be announced soon.
