The Wilson varsity basketball program earned a split decision last Thursday evening at Mounds High School.

The road battle with the host Mounds Golden Eagles and Lady Eagles was the final game in the first-half portion of the Wilson cage squads’ regular-season schedule. The Lady Tigers finished the first half with a 4-4 record following last Thursday’s 47-14 rout of the host Lady Eagles, who are coached by former Henryetta girls coach Rodney Bencoma, in the opening contest.

The Tigers watched a 10-point lead heading into the final eight minutes of regulation turn into a 5-point defeat, 63-58, in the nightcap, to finish the first half with a 3-5 record.

The Wilson cagers will enjoy a 2-week break to celebrate the holidays then will return to the hardwood January 5-7 at the Earlsboro Tournament.

In last Thursday’s girls contest, the Lady Tigers emerged from the opening frame with a 16-6 advantage, then took a 27-12 lead into halftime after outscoring the host Lady Eagles 11-6 in the second period.

A 14-0 margin in the third quarter extended the Wilson lead to 41-12, then the visitors finished off the decisive victory with a 6-2 advantage in the final stanza.

Janelle Proctor led the way offensively for Wilson with a game-high 17 points. Kaozong Yang also finished in double figures for the Lady Tigers with 13 points.

Other Wilson scorers in the road win were Brooklyn Weeks with seven, Gracie Bear six, and Jayda Pinkston and Jaslene Proctor two each.

In last Thursday’s boys game, the Tigers trailed 14-13 after the first eight minutes, then outscored the host Eagles 18-8 in the second quarter for a 3122 lead at the intermission.

The Wilson squad edged Mounds by a 17-16 margin in a back-and-forth third period for a 48-38 advantage, heading into the final frame.

In the fourth quarter, the Tigers were held to 10 points in the period, while the host Eagles tallied 25 points in the stanza to hand the Wilson gentlemen the 63-58 setback.

Keshon Shelburn led the offensive attack for Wilson with a game-high 29-point performance. Charles Shelburn also found his way into double-digit scoring last Thursday with 13 points. Ryder Herring just missed double figures for the Tigers with nine points, while the remaining Wilson scorers were Andrew Wilson with four, Peyton Proctor three, and Nick Williams two.
