Folks, I thought you might find this interesting. I did. “Retirement is a turning point in life. Either a downhill slope into insecurity and resentment, or a time filled with new enjoyment, learning and adventure.
“After we retire we can try things we once wanted to do, but couldn’t because of daily responsibilities and lack of money. The good things that captured our attention when we were young filled with idealism, hope and a wide range of interests.”
This was written by a man that is now 98 years old. Guess who?
Jimmy Carter who is the oldest living and longest lived president as well as the one with the longest post presidency. And, his 76 year long marriage makes him the longest married president.
He is also the third oldest living person to have served as a state leader.
He was the 39th president, from 1977 to 1981. He goes on to say, “When he left the White House, my staff and cabinet officers took up a collection to buy me a present.
“My secretary told me secretly it was a jeep, which I didn’t want. I enjoyed woodworking and wanted to make furniture. So they took the money and bought me tools to furnish a woodworking shop.
“I’ve enjoyed that gift as much as anything I’ve ever received and since. I have made over a hundred pieces of furniture. I also took up painting, writing books, fly fishing and bird watching.
“Advancing age needn’t become a time of despair, trepidation, fear or hopelessness. It can be a time of blessing and enjoying the good life God has given us.”
Well said, Mr. Carter! I have a ways to go to be 98 yet, I try to enjoy my days. Unhurried days to do mostly what I want to do, when I want to do it. Oh my, the blessings of old age.
One of my neighbors is a quilt maker. Yup, she keeps turning out those beautiful quilts. They are a piece of art.
Another neighbor does rock painting. I go there often times on the east patio, just to admire her rock paintings.
I do a bit of rock painting myself. We have an abundance of rocks here to choose from. Painted a dozen or so with pastel acrylic paints. Then I put, what I hope, is a few encouraging sayings to read as one walks by. Now this is on the west patio of my building.
To name a few like: Dream Big, Laugh out Loud, Sing in the Rain, Enjoy the Little Things and Make a Wish.
Several enjoy Diamond Art Painting.
He said, “Don’t mess with old people. We didn’t get to this age by being stupid.”
She said, “If I waited until I had all my ducks in a row, I’d never get across the street. Sometimes you just have to gather up what you’ve got and make a run for it.”
Woohoo!!
