Schulter cagers split recent home action

The Schulter varsity basketball program hosted a pair of contests earlier this week, coming away with a split decision in the 2-game homestand.

The Schulter cage squads began the homestand Monday with a sweep of the visiting Midway Chargers and Lady Chargers with the host Lady Bulldogs needing overtime to walk away with the hard-fought 23-22 decision. The Bulldogs completed the home sweep in the nightcap, defeating the visiting Chargers by a 41-32 outcome.

The final game of the homestand occurred Tuesday against the Wetumka Chieftains and Lady Chieftains.

Both Schulter squads found themselves on the short end of double-digit decisions with the Lady Bulldogs suffering a 55-24 setback in the opening contest, while the Bulldogs were on the losing end of a 72-42 outcome in the nightcap.

The Schulter cagers will close out the first-half portion of their regular-season schedule Friday at Wanette.

Below are summaries from Schulter’s 2-game homestand earlier this week.

--- Monday, December 12 Girls Game

Schulter 23, Midway 22, OT

The Lady Bulldogs tallied the only point in the first period on a free throw by Jenna Henderson. In the second stanza, the lone point for the Schulter ladies came on a charity toss by Journey Henderson, while Midway tallied two points in the frame on a basket by Monique Lang, sending the team to the intermission with the score deadlocked at 2-2.

Both teams put up six points in the third quarter and 10 points in the final eight minutes of regulation to send the contest to a 4-minute overtime period with the score knotted at 18.

The Lady Bulldogs came out of the overtime period with a narrow 5-4 advantage to walk away with the hardfought 23-22 victory. Jenna Henderson led the way offensively for Schulter with nine points, followed by Addiemae Kanada with seven and Macee Henderson five. Alyssa Evans and Journey Henderson rounded out the Lady Bulldog scoring with one point each.

--- Boys Game

Schulter 41, Midway 32

The Bulldogs led 8-6 after one and 15-12 at halftime. The host squad extended their lead to nine, 24-15, heading into the final eight minutes of regulation after outscoring the visitors 9-3 in the third period.

Midway tallied 17 points in the final frame in a comeback attempt, but the host Bulldogs countered with 17 points of their own in the stanza to walk away with the nine-point win, 41-32.

Bobby Calhoun had the hot hand offensively for Schulter, finishing with a game-high 15 points. Jordan Horne also found double-digit scoring in the win, tallying 11 points in the contest.

Other Bulldog scorers against Midway were Kameron Vinyard with six, Willie Corn four, Bradyn Brown three, and Jordan Freeman two.

--- Tuesday, December 13 Girls Game

Wetumka 55, Schulter 24

The Lady Bulldogs trailed 8-3 after the first eight minutes of action, then were outscored 17-9 in the second stanza to go into the intermission with a 25-12 deficit.

The Schulter ladies were unable to overcome the double-digit margin in the second half, as Wetumka took the final two frames 20-4 and 10-8, respectively, to hand the Lady Bulldogs the 55-24 setback.

The top scorer for Schulter in the loss was Caidence Campbell with six points, followed by the duo of Addiemae Kanada and Jenna Henderson with five points each.

Other Lady Bulldog scorers against Wetumka were Alyssa Evans with three, Alexis Hurt and Angel Vinyard two each, and Journey Henderson one.

--- Boys Game

Wetumka 72, Schulter 42

The visitors took the opening stanza by a 26-3 margin. The host Bulldogs came out of the second period with a 13-8 advantage to go into the halftime break down by 18 points, 34-16.

The Schulter gentlemen were outscored 22-10 in the third quarter for a 56-26 deficit with eight minutes remaining in regulation.

Both teams tallied 16 points in the final stanza to put the host Bulldogs on the short end of a 72-42 decision.

Leading the way offensively for Schulter was Bobby Calhoun with game-high 21 points.

Other Bulldog scorers against Wetumka were Kameron Vinyard with eight, Nick Henderson and Willie Corn four each, Colton Nuckolls three, and Isaiah Bauer two.
